0A - Stalls

I’m new to responsive tricks and I’m curious if anyone has some suggestions for landing stalls consistently. I hit them about 50% of the time with the other 50% of the Yoyo turning sideways and falling. I’m using a Duncan Butterfly primarily.

Super soft throws, shorter string, absorb the landing!

Soft breakaway, don’t have hands too far apart, try to intercept the breakaway. Common mistake is trying to trapeze and get it to wind up after landing a regular trapeze.

Hey! Welcome to 0A! Bending your knees can help soften the catch. And try to keep the throw pretty light so that the yo-yo doesn’t come flying into the string. What yo-yo are you playing with? A highwall helps too.

Softening the catch was the part I was missing. That is helpful.

You can throw much lighter throws than you’re probably used to with 1a, too. Cuz we don’t even necessarily want it to wind all the way back up, so just a little goes a long way.

Also, cut your string even shorter! The shorter strings end up leaving you more wall space for your stalls, and eventually flips. I played super short strings for my first 4 years of fixie play. Like, I would tie my knot about 4 inches below my waist with the yoyo sitting on the floor. I just recently, after UYYC this year, started playing a little longer, around belly button length. But, I’m certain that the super short strings gave me a big advantage when it came to learning and refining everything.

Yeah I’ve found the Duncan butterfly to be light. I didn’t like it at first, but it is easier for me as I don’t have the control yet.

Hello, I think there are some fantastic replies already, and bend knees, the short string, and that yoyo is perfect for this.

Also grind that trick hard, from all angles practice rinse repeat non-stop, until you got it and then go again. That’s how I approached it.

II recently put together a list for someone else, maybe it’ll benefit you.

It really is a good yoyo for that. The weight of it is nice. Another yoyo I found really light at first but able to control well is the Layer Infinity - Kasm.

Honestly, the Butterfly’s an excellent choice for both beginner and 0a gurus alike.

I like to keep my throwhand a little higher than the yoyo so that the string forms a checkmark shape. It helps keep the yoyo stalled on the string instead of falling off.

Yeah, and you really don’t need to throw it very hard either. If you’re dropping straight into a stall, just be a lot lighter with the toss.
