Those who have “owned” your YYBC Workhorse, what “Mods” have you done to power your Workhorse? This Boomer wants to know!
Talking choices for bearings or strings or weight rings or maintenance or whatever. Those deviations from stock enhancing personalRESPONSIVE play experience.
I enjoy my Gotham color way with a ZGRT 4mm bearing way better than stock concave 5mm. Figured there might be some other permutations worth exploring.
I have two, which are each set up a bit differently. The one I play the most is set up strictly for 0A responsive play, with a MR115-2RS (4mm wide flat bearing with rubber shields) and a large drop of 3 in 1 oil. Currently has an Alphaline string on it, but I also really liked it with the Nectar normal thickness string I had on it previously.
I carry mine in my pocket every day. My initial setup is a ZGRT 4mm wide D bearing and Throw Yo Nectar String.
I have not done any maintenance since the initial setup. When I first set it up this way, I had put some lube in the bearing. It was a little too responsive. Now that the lube has worn out, it is perfect.
Went to local RC Car Track/Store to pick up some 4mm wide bearings (sadly he had no 3mm wide bearings).
The store clerk was quite impressed with the YYBC Workhorse. He yo-yo’d in his youth and was way amazed with how “smooth” modern stuff played. He was way interested in how they worked. I disassembled. Immediate he saw the yo-yo guts referring to the pads as the “clutch” without explanation understanding the inner workings. He also lubed with his secret RC sauce the borrowed El Mijo 4 mm bearing I had installed in my Workhorse.
That’s an awesome story. I have 2 different setups I’m using. 2 I have with a greased 5mm. I grease with 2-3 small toothpick dabs of Black Moly lithium grease onto 1 side of the bearing and then a drop of sewing machine oil directly onto the grease. After a few throws this spreads evenly and give fantastic response. It spins closer to dry bearing RPM even retaining some of that dry bearing ring. And it gives instant and predictable response that hasn’t given out on any bearing I’ve done this way yet. This is my preferred setup so far. The response is instant unless you don’t want it to be… as in hops. It hops without responding and does well with responsive 1a style stuff.
The other I have the 4 mm dry bearing in it with a slight reduction in the post height so as to squeeze fully down on the bearing. Setup like this it loops and responds so lovely but you can’t even Trapeze without it wanting to pull all the string into the gap. It is a neat fun way to achieve stalls…
One of these days I’ll get some more A size shims and shim it a bit until the response is perfect. Until then.
Thanks for this thread. I’ll admit, I haven’t really found the sweet spot to enjoy the Workhorse yet. I am going to try swapping the bearing and string and will report back.
