Interesting. I’m gonna see what other folks suggest here. I am always team MORE POWER. Wider or more rim weight are always my answer for life in general.
Edit: are we thinking slimmer and more Jackal like?

I like the idea of a Workhorse Lite to kind of bring something different and special to the table for a unique run. I’m always up for wider rims as well, but then the question also comes if that is just negating any of the “Lite” effects that would be in play. My mind was more translating a Lite version as also being pushed a little more into the fixie player side of the fence, temporarily.
Though as usual, I also have full faith in the actual design experts that they’ll bring something killer to the table regardless, haha.
Will the “Lite” have a spike, or are we saving that for the Workhorse 2.0?
I really like the idea of the lite being a fixed axle or at least coming with a blank to be played fixed. I’ve mostly been throwing butterflies lately so the more fixed axle options the better IMO.
I mean we could see how the ultem blanks @AudreySickburn is working on go and see if it would make sense to order some d blanks and make that a collab part of the FAF/MRM drop. Not sure if timelines are too short or how we feel about adding those extra logistics/ complexity. I think a metal blank like the zgrt d blanks are a tad too expensive and would balloon the price outside of what’s reasonable. I do think if your gonna fixie it you would want it a tad lighter
I honestly have great results with Andy’s 3d printed blanks. I use them in tons of different yoyos. So far, the only one they don’t work extremely well in is the plasm, and that’s just because of the tolerance issues with the bearing seat. It would also be much cheaper than having them machined, if Andy is down, of course. Could possibly even include a couple if we went the 3d printed route.
I would definitely be down to provide d bearing blanks assuming the a bearing blanks work. If you give me an idea how large the runs usually are I can guesstimate cost.
Honestly, @G2_Jake have you ever done a fixed axle? Could you conceive of a way to lighten the Workhorse and actually design it as a real fixed axle, not a blank? If not, designing the seat and gap with a 4mm D bearing in mind would certainly have a more fixie style response. Just switching out to a 4mm in the production yields fantastic results but it seems the posts touch just ever so slightly before fully squeezing down on the bearing. I shaved my posts on my proto and that yields a tad too much response coupled with the big pads. So a carefully and precisely shimmed 4mm gives an excellent boost to response. I haven’t played with shims since the first prototype because I just haven’t gotten any more. I know @Captrogers you have been using shims, do you happen to know the amount you have shimmed? Going back to my first prototype I’m feeling like it was somewhere around .001-.003” Anyhow, it would be a radical change from what currently works well and that would probably require more time than what is trying to be achieved here. I think any changes beyond trimming weight could result in the need for more test runs, not necessarily a bad thing but not meeting the timeline again. Hopefully this circular remark will come back around to a place that adds ever more confusion to the mix… then I can say… welcome to my world.
They work well for you and me but for folks who throw aggressive they melt slightly and bind to the string if it’s poly string. So we would have to maybe be careful warning folks but I would be happy to print a mountain of them.
Also happy to provide machined Ultem blanks at my cost. Probably two bucks a unit guesstimate but need the run size to know better.
I can check that this afternoon.
With that shim measurement I can also adjust blank sizing. I could make them 4.1 mm wide or whatever.
I legit think my issue was user error with the 3d blanks. Had I regulated them to 0A play with cotton, I’d have been just fine.
Oh! That’s much cheaper than I expected the ultem to be! Sick!
I got some actual quotes for 4 mm wide ultem blanks from the shop now.
50x blanks: $4.58 per unit
100x blanks: $2.79 per unit
200x blanks: $1.78 per unit
300x blanks: $1.41 per unit
I like the idea of a blank with the workhorse as that’s the implications of the name. A yoyo that can do it all well.
However a premium all metal screw apart fixed axle could be a very cool G2 x boomer project. Call it the desk ornament and make it only in glossy gold. (That would be a separate project entirely if it even was considered)
I would also love a pair of double dice as cufflinks that can be used as cw or even begleri beads but that feels like something outside of the G2 style possibly.
Yeah, I think a true fixie could be cool at some point as well. We have a woodie with the Dead 'Orse and a semi-official with the Kasm/Classic in the YYBC retro-cup colorway which is cool at least as well! I think the ultimate goal of the Lite was for like a limited v1.5 essentially, so will be more light tweaks I imagine to bide the time until the v2 next-gen. A bearing blank of some sort I think would pair really well with a Lite version though certainly.
Yes intention is we want to launch before MRM and if we have to make changes that need a round of prototypes or two we will not hit that date. If we tweak weight a tad for a v1.5 and maybe coordinate something silly like a blank we can probably pull off the goal without much issue. Keep in mind the biggest limiting factor is time
Our Ideal goal is to shave more weight, but not require a full redesign/prototype.
I personally think if we could get the Workhorse down to 50 grams, it would be SICK.
All Previous Workhorses have come with a Throw Yo string. I would like to keep that going.
Adding another member Product (Bearing Blanks) would be AWESOME!!!
We wont know total units untill the Pre-Order is complete, along with how many OG’s Mr. Jake will order.
Absolutely This!!!
