1: Black Moth Super Rainbow - Such a signature sound, filled with emotion, nostalgia and experimentation. Beautiful stuff. This band (and all it’s related projects) have stuck with me for a long time.
2: Autechre - Experimental, instrumental electronic listening music. Sometimes very abrasive and intense, other times deeply emotional, slow, brooding. All tied together with some of the coolest beats I’ve ever heard. Brilliant.
3: Boards of Canada - More electronic listening music. Life-changing stuff. Some of the greatest melodies ever written. The brothers of BoC are incredibly talented. Lots of cool sounds buried deep in the mix as well, so listen out for that.
4: Purity Ring - Newer band, beautiful electronic pop with deep, dark lyrics. Lots of pitch-shifting, great production, southern style hip hop beats… Brilliant.
5: Pinback - Classic. Truly amazing interplay between guitar, bass, and the vocals of both members. Beautiful stuff. Has a bit of funk influence on some songs too.
The Who
Very influential band in early rock. They were ahead of there time in music. Pete Townshend also started smashing guitars on accident. He also started the windmill and other things on stage.
Pink Floyd
Just another brick in the wall… lol. I like Pink Floyd because of the nature of their songs. Their songs aren’t 'I met a girl and fell in love with her," they are about other things and often in odd time signatures, which, in my opinion, makes a song more interesting.
Led Zeppelin
Gotta love 'em. Classic band, first to really bring guitar to the front. Whole band was amazing, just listen to them.
Deep Purple
Great band. Great music. Ritchie Blackmore basically invented shredding. John Lord was really good at keyboards, and Ian Pace was amazing at drums.
Rush
Although Geddy Lee’s singing voice may be high, Rush is an amazing band. All of them are incredible musicians. Neil Peart is considered by many one of the greatest drummers of all time. Geddy Lee can play bass, keyboards and sing at the same time. Alex Lifeson is a great guitar player who’s solos are all over the place on the fretboard. His chord progressions aren’t easy either. When a band has stayed together for 40 years, you know they have to be good.
