There are very few actual yoyo designers (who can like… do a CAD from scratch and actually know what they’re doing, and how design changes will affect performance) so if that’s what you mean, it’ll probably be a pretty small number of entries. If you mean opening it up to anyone who can reasonably sketch something out with some specs, then that’s a different story. There has to be some baseline of what is considered an acceptable entry though, cause otherwise you might get some wonky “back of the napkin” type stuff. But from there, the community could vote on their favorite, and maybe even do a group funding thing to get it made. Just a few thoughts.

Ages ago existed the world modding championship, I am not sure why they stopped it but it was very interesting

I would like to be able to consider myself among these.
I think that there are a lot of awesome designers out there and I think it would be interesting to see what they could cook up given a day to design. I don’t know how judging would work though. Maybe different divisions based on uniqueness or a division for most performant or most fun?
I’ve heard of this. It sounds interesting. Definitely a skill set I don’t have though.
Don’t we already call this ongoing competition a “market”?

There just isn’t enough modders to take part. It’d be cool if it was a thing again, I’d try to submit something definitely but I doubt I’d be able to keep up with some of the crazy stuff the legends put together.

With 3D printing becoming more common, I would be curious on what could be created from that front. Although I’m not sure if anyone can top this crazy design from @kyo
For the record Kyle, I absolutely would kill to get my hands on one of these if you still make them. Even if I’d have to wait the 10 years for it to ship lol

I have some design ideas, but idk if I’d enter them into a competition, considering if I could bring the idea to fruition it could be worth more than some grand prize.
I do think good yo yo design is very subjective though. As now only a month into collecting, I’m over the “looks” related to the cost of collecting and more into the shape, throw, and feel.

There is a judging system in place to decide which is the one best yoyoer that year. The market is different. Yoyos can be successful or popular but there is no definitive best yoyo for that year. Whether there needs to be idk. It could be most unique yoyo instead.
Funny enough I have a new version of that I worked on a few months ago. I’ll get to it eventually haha

So from ~2000-2013 we had a world mod contest that ran in conjunction with the world yoyo contest.
There were eventually two divisions (mods and creations) as well as an overall winner.
We developed a range of criteria to judge the yoyos and assembled a panel of expert judges (modders and manufacturers) to score them. Tbh it was partially an excuse to drink a lot and play with awesome yoyos…
We phased it out because there just wasn’t enough interest. The code for a “good yoyo” was pretty much resolved as well as cheap manufacturing options… As a result most people stopped modding or making stuff themselves.
I’ve floated the idea of bringing it back, at least in some form but there would have to be enough people willing to step up for it.
