Why NOT Higby?

I almost backed his Kickstarter because I have three young boys and it would have been a great book to force them to read with me so they could eventually, begrudgingly follow in my hobby footsteps. I also think his art is unique and beautiful.

Now that all of this has happened, I wouldn’t be able to read the book without negative feelings, which is not how someone should feel towards a book for children.

Truthfully, it sounds like enabling of unethical behavior when long-term friends pop in and vouch for him. Maybe instead of vouching, encourage him to address this directly with those who invested in him.

This isn’t a painted ProYo that got lost in the mail. It’s $12,000. When someone goes through hard times, and a large sum of money becomes available to them, they don’t typically set it aside for use later.

Does he have the money available in his bank account? Is it all gone and he’s diligently working to earn it back? Did he invest it in GameStop with a plan to move to the Caribbean in the near future?

No one knows because he isn’t communicating.

I’ve got to get some of his stuff. I like his art. It’s fun and playful just like a good yo-yo.

I’d love to get the book for my niece and nephew along with some starter yoyos…

I backed his Kickstarter campaign on 4/17/2019 so I could read “Everybody Yoyos” to my daughters for their bedtime story. It looks like I’ll receive it in time for them to instead read it to me when they visit me in the old age home.

To be fair, you don’t know the whole story, and are extrapolating an oversimplified view of things based on limited information.

Sorry, not trying to derail the thread but I think it’s so neat to chat with legends of the industry. I didn’t know you where on the forum. I’m a star struck 50 something newbie!! Good to meet you sir.

I hear what the point you’re making, though it isn’t accurate.

There is an update on the Kickstarter under, “Updates.”

Granted, the update is a year old, and it would probably help to give another update, even if to say that the situation is still the same. However, it’s not true that no update was ever given.

It doesn’t seem like you’re coming from a place of solving the problem; only a place of throwing stones and spreading resentment. It’s easy to cast judgment and project self righteousness without knowing the full story, but it’s just not helpful.

I’m guilty of that sometimes myself too, but it does nothing to solve the problem, and if anything, makes the ability to solve the problem more difficult.

John is also a legend of the industry. hence the defense. Everything slowed during Covid. You don’t know the personal struggles that maybe some have gone through. I don’t know jip about what’s going on but if you have people close to him saying be patient then I suggest we be patient.

Who knows if he even realizes the product is still active on his website and if anyone has purchased off the site in however long. The product description is 3 years out of date and clearly hasn’t been looked at in a long time.

Regardless, if you’re worried about people paying off the book on the site and not getting the product, wouldn’t it make more sense to contact him about the discrepancy?

I’m not saying it’s not a mistake to have the listing stay up; only that you’re insinuating malintent and not doing anything to actually solve the problem.

Did you buy your $hit Cannon on Amazon?

Or… are you just a natural Hater?

You sound just like a guy that would stir the pot for a Witch.

Are you the one that has the rope? Or are you just a guy that tries to insight the mob to go get a rope?

I appreciate the reply, and I understand the viewpoint, though I don’t think these situations are equivalent.

Regarding the A-rt drama, I don’t think that I handled it in the best way possible initially. I initially came at that from a place of arrogance and anger. While I meant what I said in the post you’re referring to, I don’t think it was the most constructive way to handle things, and I regret that.

Look, it’s not my place to spill other people’s personal problems, though I believe all of it has been shared by Higby directly:

The man is one of the best in the world at what he does, and has been for 25+ years. The Covid lockdown decimated his income overnight, not to mention his career in a broader sense. He has two autistic sons, one severe, who, to my knowledge, requires around the clock care. He had a tree fall on his family’s only car, which insurance didn’t cover.

I’ve been in unfortunate desperate financial situations myself, and I know how big of a struggle it is to try to claw my way out of it. And not just how big of a struggle it is in terms of effort, but also in terms of time. I’ve never had to do that with a family, and I’ve certainly never done that with a child with special, incredibly expensive, needs.

But I do know that if I was in the same situation, my first priority would be to my family and to keeping my food on the table and keeping the lights on. It has to be.

Is it a mistake? I honestly don’t know. I’m a person of honesty and integrity and I have a pretty black and white moral compass. But if I was in that bleak of a situation, I know that I’d have to put my family first.

I don’t know what justice is here. Is it giving people refunds?
If so, it’s not like he has the money to pay them back.

Not to mention that Kickstarter’s terms and conditions clearly state that there’s no guarantee, so purchasers should have had some responsibility of the inherent risk involved.

Is “justice” self-flagellating himself over and over publicly giving the same update that just restates the same problems over and over?
Maybe to some, but I don’t see how that solves the problem.

Since refunds can’t happen, I personally think that “justice” likely involves getting the books printed and fulfilling the promise.

But, it’s a lot harder to do that if his name gets dragged through the mud and reduces his income further. Not to mention the demotivating shame that comes when the pitchforks come out and you’re already hanging on by a thread.

If I were in the same shoes, I do think that more updates would be helpful, even if only to restate the same things.

Though I think that’s also difficult when you have mob mentality who is out for blood and there’s no blood left to give.

There’s plenty of people here who can speak to how good and honest of a person John is. I don’t need to be just another voice singing his praises, but I do know that I’d give him the 12k if I could.

I gotta admit…… that statement is Really funny😂

I was going to respond a little more ‘aggressively’, but when I realized you have been a member of this forum since August, no doubt you know what you are talking about.

But, on a more constructive note, it might be a good idea for you to sharpen up on a few different words> Libel vs. Slander vs. Defamation – What are the Differences?

No doubt there is a ‘checkered history’ of the ongoing Book release Saga.

And the turmoil caused by a few A-RT ‘mis-steps are certainly questionable.

……But you can’t just make a personal effort to throw these guys to the Wolves with circumstantial accusations.

Unless you have document facts that would hold up in a Court of Law you can’t just keep throwing around statements that could have long lasting damaging effects on others.

Trust me on this… I’m trying to help you, now.

I appreciate all the support in direct messages. I’ll admit I’m not the most informed on the subject and mr big bucks has made me scared to continue saying anything at all but I’ll leave this last message from someone who messaged me a little bit ago. They seem to have a bit more knowledge on the subject.

To address the naive comment, I didn’t say the website hadn’t been updated. I said the product listing hasn’t been updated in multiple years.

If someone is going to throw around words like naive, they could at least take the time to read the comment correctly.

For relevance’s sake, there are other products on the storefront that have been sold out for 1.5-2+ years.
