I never once said this about anyone or that collectors don’t throw. This is not how I think at all. All I said is people here seem to be more into the collecting side of things. I LOVE organics <3
Ah sorry I didn’t mean you personally said that. I just meant it was the general attitude amongst these types of comments. You sometimes share their views but you’re at least willing to understand the other side of the conversation and not talk down to people like others do.
Also I know you didn’t explicitly say you cannot collect and throw but the comment does sound like you’re saying the forum is made up for non-throwing collectors. But thanks for clarifying and I understand what you mean now.
I’m sure if I did post a trick of me doing a forward pass you’d be mad supportive but to me I don’t see the point in posting a video like that. Its been done a thousand times over and I don’t think I’d get anything out of it. Like I’d understand if I was having trouble with a trick or wanted feedback on a combo then post a video and people could help. But yeah the condescending attitude I see from people(not yourself) really puts me off that side of the forum. I still check out tricks on here from time to time but I usually just watch trick videos on Instagram.
Sorry I haven’t slept yet so I’m not doing the best at articulating what I’m trying to say haha. And as far as the forward pass goes… Maybe you do it with a style nobody has seen before. I’m sure your forward pass is INCREDIBLE
Also I really appreciate your contributions to this conversation
Lmao don’t worry I’m going to sleep soon haha

I play for fun and I look at people’s yoyos and I occasionally watch people play. I think it’s a safe bet to say that anyone who might act condescending also actually looks at yoyos. Probably collects them. Probably loves looking at them sometimes. Even if they wouldn’t admit it. We’re not all so different in everything, even if they could try to come across that way.
I’m only gonna speak for myself here…
-
love yoyoing but it is not a great spectator activity.
-
It is a bummer that trick videos don’t get much engagement here. For discussions around the tricks, the forum is better than insta.
-
I don’t like insta because of the meta verse (not the yoyo meta, mind you) that it is connected to. Truly I find it disgusting. That said, I wish I still had access to my insta accounts just to check out tricks sometime. Generally, I wish folks weren’t putting so much of their excellent content on damaging and exploitive social media giants and were using alternative venues like forums instead.
Not you so much, Cotton. @nightshadow implies it all the time and it makes me sad.
Someone mentioned horizontal and this is what we got…
Thank you @SR1 for pointing out your history. It gives a timeline of where you came from and how you use this forum, then and now. Each of us has our own timeline. Myself, I’m only a couple years in (yr 1 was in that “other place” learning the first 50). When I found a forum where everyone was talking yoyo (yoyoexpert), I was elated. At this point in life, I have “Adult Money” so my collection has grown to a modest number. I didn’t realize that I would fall in love with design side, the engineering that goes into such a simply toy. I jumped right from the Sage to the Bi-Metal Shutter. For me, the Sage was a toy, Butter was something very different. The bimetal construction to me was so intriguing, not to mention the utter beauty of the thing. I needed MORE! Pictures provide somewhat of a fix. At this point, I’m trying to limit what comes in.
All that said… I throw every day all day. I have a throw on me all the time. Its on my belt or in my hand and I love it when people ask “what is that”? Its a chance for me to let them know that the group still exists. Its a chance for me to show them how cool I think it is. Not everyone gets it and that ok. I get more stories of “how much fun it used to be”. A smile cracks on their face and I let them know about YYE. If I have one, I hand them a Whip!
Just because I collect doesn’t mean that I’m not playing or learning something new. I wish that we could disconnect the two. I try horizontal every once in a while but honestly I play more to flow than compete. Its just my timeline. When someone tells me I’m doing it wrong or I should be doing this or that, it doesn’t make sense to me. We’re all part of a seemingly small community so why alienate someone that loves the same thing you do. Find your subgroup and push the sport forward! …it is a sport! or maybe its a dance. Your choice.
Oh… IG & YouTube is where I watch tricks and I couldn’t agree with @mable any more! When the time is right, maybe I’ll post some video myself.
For only a limited time throwing I’m sure your skills are INSANE! Keep on being the amazing person you are
I would say quite the opposite actually. I have a great desires to see more people do both, and I frequently hold myself up as an example of someone who does.
But that small gripe aside, I love your response! Well said.
I think the subcommunities of yoyoing have kind of just spread themselves out on different parts of the internet. Instagram heavily favors tricks (great pics dont get enough attention) and the forums are heavily favors pics. Discord tends to be a bit of both, which is likely due to the way you can organize channels there.
I think the general animosity between collectors and players comes about because collectors will often buy yoyos that players want to use and not really play them. On the other hand, collectors are often told the way they enjoy the hobby isnt valid, which also isnt fun. Its a 2 sided coin really
Id also note that someone encouraging you to play with your yoyos more isnt often meant to be condescending, its often just people encouraging you to partake in something they find fun (and i think thats what @nightshadow and @Theycallmecotton might be trying to do)
Doesn’t really matter if you collect, throw or do both. As long as we are all enjoying our yoyos that all that matters in the end <3
That’s going to be a popular response no doubt!
This is a common response to my yammering about lack of throwing in some dudes. And it always bothered my a little.
It seems like for some people, part of the casual thrower identity is to very consciously not be part of the “young gun competition crowd”. You know, those speed combo/horizontal kids.
And these people automatically assume that I’m trying to get them to grab a Shutter, and start trying to do rail combos or horizontal for 8 hours a day. This assumption is made an annoying amount!
(Admittedly, I have muddied the waters by making a page to encourage horizontal yo-yoing, and making some snarky horizontal comments, which I regret now, because it no doubt increased the frequency of the assumption outlined above.)
But regardless (I know this will shock and AMAZE my adult thrower friends), I’m really not into meta stuff myself. In fact, this was a large contributor to the break I have taken in my competition pursuits. I often find meta tricks to be pretty repetitive.
But here’s the thing, the great logical fallacy with the assumption mentioned previously: there are SO many other styles besides “meta” out there. So many different ways to learn, improve yourself, and get closer to mastery. Look at Charles and Jensen, look at Ed Haponik, look at Yuuki Spencer and Mark Montgomery. And just because I’m trying to encourage the throwing side of yoyo does NOT mean I’m trying to say you need to ditch your organic yoyos and start learning competition material. Not at all.
Please, to all my casual yoyoers out there: curb that thought tendency.
In yoyoing is meta used as the acronym most effective tactics available? Can you explain to me exactly what meta tricks are?
Yeah, so my understanding of meta tricks are common elements done by many members of the competition scene that are designed to score very well. Usually in the technical execution or “click” category.
There are some really neat meta tricks, but the thing is, in recent years it has become harder and harder to get anywhere in competition without a great deal of “meta” material. I remember feeling very discouraged at the last contest I went to, because there were people scoring higher than me who had a trick set that almost entirely consisted of meta youtube tutorials that I recognized.
Meta tricks are often done by pre-teen/up and coming throwers on the competition scene, because they do indeed score very well, and they are often relatively easy to learn.
I’ve been debating with myself over whether I want to bite the bullet and learn a bunch of meta material before the next time I compete, because my trick set that I’ve made over the course of years doesn’t score that well. To be honest, I’ll probably just get on stage and have fun.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me. I was confused
