Why Do The Posts In The Mailday Thread Get More Attention Than The Posts In The Tricks Thread?

Pics are amazing! When I first see a new yoyo, it lifts my spirits! I can imagine the new owner’s glee as they experience that first look, first touch, and first throw. When I watch a video, I love the skill but…so many times, more often than not, the yoyoer just doesn’t seem to be loving it. Sorry I can’t watch it. There’s an energy, an enthusiasm I look for when watching videos that draws me in much more than the difficulty of the trick. I’d rather watch the facial expressions and share the excitement of someone’s first several trapezes than the somber scowl of someone playing very practiced, well executed more difficult/technical tricks.

Did somebody say this or do this to you?

Brilliantly stated.

What do you mean? Are you wanting me to do key word searches on the forums to pull up specific examples?

To be honest, if you’re looking for data points related to this conclusion, I think that the source material contained within this very thread ought to show the beginnings of pretty direct trend…

Right? One of my favorite things is watching other peoples tricks and all the different styles people have. I’m like a die hard yo-yo fan. I love everything about it. Like look at the gaming community… Weather it be twitch or a forum people really enjoy watching people play games. Same with skateboarding. It’s not that people don’t enjoy watching people yoyo… On other platforms trick videos get tons of love. It’s just not like that here for some reason… You can say because it’s a forum but a lot of people here state that they don’t like watching others throw because it’s not exciting… So for people to say because it’s a forum is kind of irrelevant. Just my opinion though <3

I believe it is the intense human voyeuristic need to see what other people are doing. The looking over someone’s shoulder to see what the other are reading on the train or bus. To get a quick peek, at are they similar to me or different.
In this context of the YYE forum, I believe it is a positive thing for me I get perspective on peoples personal choices, more than once it has lead me to a different throw with a different trick experience and challenged me to attempt an expansion of my trick portfolio with limited but gratifying success.

Let’s finish this week and enjoy the weekend everyone.

Same for me

I mean, is that your experience? Do you think those things because someone said them or did them to you? Did anyone say they don’t like to be throwers of yoyos? Did anyone dismiss your videos like you’re silly for showing them?

I would not be making such broad statements without being able to back them up.

PM me if you wish to see specific examples, and I will be happy to provide them.

But I’d rather not clog this public thread up any more with going into the weeds.

I was asked for an opinion on why certain things get more attention than others. I pay attention to certain things, hence the specificity. It would be difficult to deny that competitive and most sponsored throwers are expected to have speed combos and some horizontal in their bag of tricks nowadays. I realize “competitive” and “sponsored” don’t apply to a number of people who record videos, so maybe I should have been specific about a disinterest in “progress” and “sharing fun concepts” as well. It’s fine and well for those of you who enjoy it, I’m not asking you to make changes on my account.

I don’t have any broad, sweeping opinions about the community we have here. There are a lot of people who are interested in the hobby for a lot of different reasons, and I like that. Collecting is the one I most relate to online, because nobody’s making 30 minute videos of complex repeaters set to shoegaze yet.

I didn’t ask for examples. I was just asking about how you felt. I’d think if someone made you feel that way, you wouldn’t want to make them feel that way.

Well alright then Mr. Scrooge!
I’ll leave you to your slimline and/or vintage organics and RSO products!

But in all seriousness, if you’re in to repeaters, I’d check out the #thingsthatrepeat

Tons of AWESOME stuff going up all the time.

I love posting videos…watching videos often makes me feel a little intimidated.

I’ve only been doing this for a short while and while I’m happy with the skill progress I’m making I’m also nowhere near the level of a lot of people posting tricks out there.

Hell, half the time i can’t even follow what they’re doing because it moves too fast.

Learning a new trick so o have something to share however takes a lot of time…then there’s video editing which takes some time. And the fact that i often don’t land a trick in one go. It takes multiple tries to get it on camera.

Contrast that with the collecting side of the hobby (the picture threads). Sharing a quick pic of what I’m throwing takes exactly 10 seconds or so. And weirdly enough gets more likes (more dopamine for me) than the trick that I worked on for a whole week.

So my monkey brain actively discourages me from only watching the occasional video…And encourages me to share pictures.

Thing is, throwing is hard…collecting is easy.

So the fact that the collecting side gets now engagement online on a platform like this only makes sense to me.

The skateboarding thing is a little interesting. I used to rollerblade…And i can tell you that people generally were just as proud of their setups as they are of their throw collection. But that sport was dominated by teenagers who generally only had the single setup to ride on and collections existed…but were less of a thing than they are with yoyos.

I’d say…if you want to see it different, be the change you want to see in the world. I’m trying to do so with sharing my amateur attempts at tricks, including warts (failed attempts and all included often). I love the pro players with their polished stuff. But I’d bet they’re in the minority…So i try to show a different side in what I do.

Anyway, do what you like…

I know you don’t care , but you constantly coming on the forum and labeling people doesn’t really achieve much, and honestly I don’t think it is going to make anyone want to get better at yoyoing. Just some food for thought ,

It’s beautiful. How’s it feel?

Eh i wouldn’t throw something this beautiful… just kidding. It’s fantastic! Smooth as you expect from G2, feels light in play, easy to control. It’s a great yoyo and they are all over BST.
