What's up with axles?

Has anyone noticed how many stripped axle threads there has been recently? Last year (I’m not talking about yesterday!) there were almost no threads about this. Now, there’s a lot of threads beginning with “My yoyo won’t screw together”

Why?

Did it ever occur to you that maybe it’s just carelessness or inexperience on the part of the people involved? A fine threaded axle takes some care to get started in the hole. A bit off and it’s on the way to stripping. Also people don’t understand how to tighten a yoyo properly.

I did consider that… but I think there’s been a lot more cases recently… which doesn’t really make that much more sense for me…

Yeah. I was rather surprised when most, if not all, of these threads state that the yoyo was barely 2 days old!

my RecRev stripped. And it wasn’t even tight >.>

Well, it’s just a popular problem then. Just deal with it. People just want help, and they deserve help. Nothing wrong with that.

I’ve been seeing these threads for 6 years now. It’s nothing new. Also you have to realize that there are more and more new people playing with yoyos. This also could be part of the problem.

And that’s what we’re trying to do.
Educating people on how to avoid a problem in the first place.

Keep in mind that just a few years back, most all high end metal yoyos came with a 1/4x20 set screw as the axle. Pretty hard to strip those out, but it is possible. Most plastics used a 6x24 set screw or nut and bolt. Most of the stripping was seen in the YYJ brass inserts due to over tightening…

Now more yoyos, including the high end metals are coming with newer designed axle systems that typically use a 6x32 or smaller axle. As noted above the finer threaded axles require more care to engage in the hole. A finer thread also strips easier, so you need to be careful tightening the yoyo. It should also be pointed out that the precision machining involved results in a product that requires some care in use. They are not intended to be banged around a lot. Yes, I know, you pay $100 for a yoyo you expect it to take a licking and keep on ticking. It just ain’t so.

There’s a semi-boom going on right now, so there’s a bunch of beginners running around with metals. If you haven’t noticed, there are a LOT of new users now which may or may not prove to be chaotic.

That makes a lot of sense. But I was responding to the original creator of this thread, not anyone else.
