With the recent trend of yoyos getting wider I’m curious what is the preferred yoyo width..
- 39mm and below
- 40-43mm
- 44-47mm
- 48-51mm
- 52mm and above
With the recent trend of yoyos getting wider I’m curious what is the preferred yoyo width..
Personally, it depends on the type of genre of yoyos. I do enjoy slimlines, casual organics, and competition yoyos, and obviously each of those play types lend themself to a different type of construction. However, in my experience, about 47-48mm is the maximum width before the yoyo starts to be cumbersome for normal use. Granted, I don’t do a lot of the super-duper hop-oriented 69.0 hook type tricks that are popular these days, so these yoyos aren’t really aimed at me.
In general these days I have been leaning towards slimmer however. Just something about the play-feel and agility feels really nice to me.
I vastly prefer 43-46mm, with 44-45mm being the sweet spot.
Initially, I hated anything over 45mm. The few 46mm+ yoyos I’d used just felt so cumbersome. Then someone sent me a YYF MonsteR, and that yoyo was so ridiculously wide (at the time) that it felt like something completely different. It opened my mind, and now I can say I’ve enjoyed 1A yoyos from 39-58mm wide. It just depends on the design, and somewhat my mood. I think 44-45mm is my general preference as well, though.
I either like small width and large diameter, or big width with small diameter.
i find i like 5s. 45 wide, 55 dia, 65g. seems to be about right for me
Seems kinda strange nobody comments on the Vu and his overwhelming majority that we all need 60mm plus to play anything anymore
Amazing coincidence… I was just getting ready to post up something about Brandon, and I decided to actually read the response I would be following.
When this thread started nine months ago it didn’t get much traction. I think simply because people‘s opinions on width are certainly all over the place. And like one responder said it depends on the yo-yo shape and things of that nature.
I can fully agree with that because a certain shape in the hand may feel a lot more unusual, the wider it gets.
But I’ll move it forward to what I was gonna say.
It’s pretty common knowledge by now that Brandon Vu has a pretty enthusiastic Sales pitch for his offset yo-yos. I don’t know exactly who does any or all of the write ups on his promotions? But some of the stuff I just find unusual. For example, the description on one of his yo-yos says That he used a certain wide yo-yo to place 21st in the world yo-yo contest. I’m not certain that is a strong compelling selling point. Because at Brandon’s advanced skill level, I think he could’ve used any good yo-yo to place 21st. But whatever on that I guess?
But as I read four of the captions for offset products, I noticed that he has the Outlier 6 and the Galactus and the Xenon Prime all at 60mm and all 3 listed as the highest Competition performance Level yoyo.
My comments are not meant to be a yo-yo review. But when I saw the results, so far, in the voting, the preference for 52 or Wider after 48 votes stands at only 5 persent.
Most of the votes were cast ‘before’ Brandon released any of his Super wide yo-yos.
….So, if the trend is actually going Wiiiiider, does anybody think after another 48 votes, the percentage of votes for very Wide yo-yos will increase dramatically?
The year Brandon finished in worlds in 21st Pl.… I wonder if all the contestants or any of them, that finished in first through the 20th Pl. used very wide yo-yos?
Because of contestants one through 20 used yo-yo‘s narrower than 60 mm, then placing 21st with a 60 mm yo-yo does not seem like that much of an accomplishment in my personal opinion.
I am pretty certain of one thing. If wider yo-yos turn out to be the real deal, you certainly don’t have to wait far into the future to get one.
Brandon seems to be doing an excellent job with that width of yo-yo already, lol
I have a Galactus and it certainly not the first yo-yo I reach for. But when I do throw it occasionally, I shake my head and think to myself how did this guy figure this out? Because it plays pretty darn good.
So if the wider stuff gets traction… Like I already mentioned, maybe that percentage of 52 mm and wider will increase dramatically…
Personally, I think the actual sweet spot is between 43 and 47 wide and the diameter is between 53 and 57. And the ideal weight range with the proper weight distribution is 62 to 66.
I fully understand and accept that every single person that may read this post can have a completely different opinion that could be just as accurate in their mind as mine is in mine.
I was thinking the same thing that we might need a “revote” now that it has been 9 months and yoyo widths have all gotten even wider overall since. I also was wondering if perhaps maybe the YYE crowd is just more of laid back less hardcore neck stole type of crowd and maybe they still don’t prefer wider yoyos. Im curious.
I still stand at 44-47mm..46mm really. I also have recently got a couple 49mm yoyos and I don’t dislike them as much as I initially thought. That’s the widest I have gone.
This trend of yoyos getting wider has made me less hyped on a lot of new releases. There has been plenty of new yoyos that peaked my interest at first then I seen the width is 50+ mm and it just turned me off. I wonder how the divide in widths has effected yoyo sales overall.
Mine was 50-55mm width
Theres definitely a bias here that makes a poll not representative of yoyoers as a whole. This forum loves organics, fixed axle play, responsive slim lines and throwback yo-yos.
Most of the new generation of yo-yoers do not engage in the same type of online content as older ones. They don’t have the same view of wider comp yo-yos as many here, and probably have much less interest in yo-yos designed to appeal to old heads.
Now, I think the average width of worlds yo-yos was like 45-46, so clearly we haven’t pushed the average width as much as the outliers (ha ha).
It’s odd to me how polarizing this stuff can be and just how much this forum can praise certain yo-yos while ignoring others.
Also I think it’s easy to exaggerate the width based on specs in your head, for reference here is 39mm vs 56mm wide.
I definitely agree with you about the poll being based on the YYE community not being a solid representation of everyone.
The photo with the yoyo width comparison I still think the one on the left looks insanely wide to me. Maybe it’s the yoyo boomer in me ha.
Fwiw, this year the mean width on 1a was 51mm, and the narrowest yo-yo used was 46.7mm. And it was the biggest increase in width year on year (going up from 48.5mm on average in 2024) from any year I believe. With 2023 to 2024 being the previous biggest jump with a ~2mm jump in width. So there has been a pretty rapid change in width in the comp scene these last two years.
That’s pretty interesting. Whered you get that data?
I’m still waiting for a 50+ mm wide high wall organic.
But in seriousness, I played with super G for about 20 minutes, and was surprised how well it played and how fast I adjusted. I’ve played an old super wide, but nothing that’s a modern wide high performer. I don’t see the need for me personally, but I’m not zoning or doing horizontal, yet.
the dunk pc just came out, probably the closest you’ll get to that
Maybe not the highest walls imaginable at this scale. . .
I’m thinking like a really wide fat tire, only with walls of panorama.
Only 45mm wide
