Brass JT Side Effects.
wait here me out,
JTi side effects
I would spring for those too.
That thing is so powerful, I donât know if I could handle the speed and power of one.
I have seen quite a bit of discussion about how different side effects can change a yoyoâs performance, and people seem to generally see the ability to adjust the center weight to be a selling point for One Drop. However, someone recently pointed out that the side effects available lately actually cover a relatively small weight range. I would like to see One Drop make a side effects âweight referenceâ set, with 8 sets of side effects in 1 gram increments from 2.5 grams to 9.5 grams. Start with the minimalist Ultra Light at 2.5 grams, then make a slightly thicker Flat Cap at 3.5 grams (the stock Flat Cap is 3.3 grams). Then, make progressively thicker Flat Caps at 4.5g, 5.5g, 6.5g, 7.5g, 8.5g, and 9.5g, and engrave the ends with the weights. I will 100% commit to buying a set right now!
You can get pretty close
- Ultra Lights - 2.5g
- Energy Domes - 3.5g
- Titanium Spikes - 4.55g
- Brass Micro Caps - 5.25g
- Brass Dietz - 6.5g
- Brass Flat Cap - 7.7g
- Brass Energy Domes - 8g
- Brass CODE1s - 9.5g
Interestingly, all of the ~4.5g Side Effects are super rare. If you donât want to find Titanium Spikes, then your options are Anti-Yos at 4.7g, Titanium Kisses at 4.3g, Mini Discs at 4.8g, or (least rare and also furthest from 4.5g) CODE1s at 4.0g.
Nickel Plated Disks are 7.4g, much closer to 7.5g than Brass Flat Caps but uh⌠good luck. They might as well not exist.
The singular option in the 7.8â9.4g range is indicative of how One Drop prefer Side Effects with low weight. Brass Mini Discs would be insanely heavy, which is why they donât exist.
If One Drop were to sell 8 sets of Side Effects like you suggest it might cost you as much as 112 USD, and they canât really sell them individually without the most popular ones constantly going out of stock so thatâs a big risk. And letâs face it the least popular ones would get discontinued first. Side Effects are also aesthetic customisation, so people would want different colours and thatâs its own headache.
Right now:
You can buy Ultra Lights, and Brass Micro Caps on One Dropâs website. I suspect theyâll probably make more Energy Domes soon.
You can also buy Energy Domes, and Brass Dietz from YoYo Expert.
So, thatâs only half, but itâs enough to get you started. If you give up on 9.5g and compromise for 4.5g, then I think you can get pretty close to what you wanted with whatâs already out there. Finding second-hand Brass Energy Domes and Brass Flat Caps should be easy.
I already have a fairly large collection of side effects, but the point isnât to hopefully âget closeâ over a period of time, if you are lucky enough to score some titanium kisses. The point would be to have a standardized âtuning kitâ, with different weights at precise regular intervals, with easy to read weights that donât require a chart to figure out. Even if there is no price break for buying the set, 8 x $14 = $112. I think lots of people in the yoyo community would happily drop $112 on such a set. I know I would. Even more if it came in a nicely machined holder.
The benefit would be the accessibility - titanium and brass SEs are super hard to come by for the most part, and there are a handful of rare aluminiums too
I was, but Titanium Spikes are much closer (and havenât been produced quite as recently!) which is why I put them on the list instead. Titanium SEs are not done by One Drop so they come out pretty irregularly. Mini Discs arenât discontinued so I feel those may come out sooner.
I love the sentiment but letâs be real, if One Drop are too busy to do Mini Discs and CODE1s (reminder that these arenât discontinued but havenât been produced in like⌠multiple years now?), thereâs no way theyâd chance making a bundled set of 8 Side Effects, most of which would be completely new. JTs are the first new regular Side Effect design (not a special edition for a collab) weâve gotten in ⌠uh ⌠forever.
Iâm dreaming of a new Novus run :â)
The higher end would probably have to be brass, or you would have columns instead of caps.
Still an interesting concept that I am sure some people would buy.
IIRC, there was a period between mid-2022 and early 2024 where the variety of SEâs produced was relatively constrained as far as weight range. Then there was a run of Brass Spikes, Mini Spikes, Ultra Lights, Domes and Energy Domes, and since then Dietz and Micro Caps (maybe others).
I would say that the current reasonably available range is 2.5 - 8.0 grams, though I think it is fair to discount Ti as âreasonably availableâ which leaves that gap between 3.5 and 5.2 grams.
Maybe with the new in-house laser engraving, Mini Disks will make a comeback.
I mean Iâm game for a weight pack (random color take what you get but itâs specific weight setups to change experience a bit. It would also be dope to see a shape pack like buy flat, dome and spike any color sort of deal
I wonder if a pull-start/fingerspin optimized (i.e. larger) spike shaped aluminum SE could bridge the gap between 3.5 and 5.2 grams.
Thorn SEs? ![]()
I would guess that due to the labour involved in assembling Side Effects that theyâre already essentially sold at-cost.
My partner has proven that regular spikes are already dangerous enough. We donât need skin-puncturing SEs. ![]()
Ohh lol I was t even expecting a discount I just meant bundles that make it easy to check out with lol
I can actually pullstart easier on ultralights instead of spikes. Itâs a skill issue, I know the spikes are more capable in other hands than mine. Video for reference.
I would personally prefer for One Drop to make enough of every existing Side Effect to go around rather than them overstretching themselves even more by making lots of new designs.
A fs se would probably sell hard just cause itâs such a trend anyway, like a al mini disk with a dimple to make fs easier or something like that. Technically the jt kind of look like they would be hard to land but work for fs and so would UL (I canât but hey im not that skilled)
I like variety so im all for more neat things
