Basically, you know how fast the top feels if you are practicing sewing machines? Say you get like 10 or 20 in and it feels very steady but you know it’s not very fast? That’s still too fast. But the first sun or two should slow it down more.
When I started getting consistent, was fighting the feeling of being scared that it’s so slow that it’s just going to fall off.
Sorry, one more thought. If it flys off to the right, it’s because A: it’s spinning too fast B: the tip wasn’t perfectly straight when starting, or you’re not releasing tension immediately in the upper arc. The upper arc should be perfectly tip out.
Sorry for the repetitious posts. But Snap starts took me about a year. Wheel of fortune (to where I can actually make corrections and keep it going) took me about a year. So to do these together is kinda unbelievable to me.
My hat is off to you, tossing that around like it was a ShortCircuit
Your tips have helped me a lot, I wasn’t getting anywhere with suns, but tonight I got out the big guns, and I was able to get that rotation and precesion a few times with the Sara! That is, a single sun, a few times out of a lot of tries. The weight and size slows things down and I can see the trick better. What a work out! You’re the man.
Omg @kevinm I’m dying laughing lol. You are right. You gotta be quick to do it with a little one. I said I’m only playing with the Sara until after Nats. But I had to try it with the lightest one. The Star. And it was so much fun . Good mental break. I’ll bet the Alice would be awesome in this situation
Ok. Try the wooden Ed Davidson trompos. Use a skinny string like a #8 from Dazzling Dave. Or at least that size. I swear it’s a cheat code. It did not feel like a small top when doing suns.
I’m kinda into these inside suns as a means of installing some RPM. I missed the corkscrew wrap but I think you can see how much is added after some messing around.
That’s cool. Watching your instructions and then working on the trick, I was able to see something you are doing that I was missing. The way you hold your nth higher and allow the top to precess tip forward is something I hadn’t understood, but trying to get the string/tip orientation right, I finally saw it when I slowed it down and looked carefully. There are a couple things you do in regard to string handling that have helped me.
Thank you for posting these tricks and explaining the details.
I didn’t even mention that did I? One thing to conscientiously work at is keeping your NTH slightly forward of your TH. Eventually you’ll just do it without thinking and of course begin correction. But if you practice and actually think about your NTH being more forward, it will help keep the string on. That’s a paraphrase from TA0
Is there a thread about this on his forum I need to check?
He has helped me with a few tricks, he is very good at explaining things, I really wish the old masters would put together a good page of spin top trick tutorials. It seems long overdue.
I think the old guys are getting too old lol. But Spintricks was trying to get a video service going. I’d like to be good enough one day to have a full video library! But until then, see if any of this helps.
Ok, thanks to the @DaneMartin excellent tutorial, (and possibly a couple beers, because this morning I was not doing too well) this afternoon I was able to get about 7 Suns before the top was too straight up and down at the end of a rotation and just slipped out. I’m not sure I could have figured this out from watching people do it. This trick is actually fun to learn even with all the dropping.
Used this ported, polished, and balanced Quick Silver Hybrid with a custom string and button.
Today was honestly just not worth practicing. I don’t think I landed a single thing so I got mad and gave up. It’s my own fault. I work 14 hours a day, 6 days a week. And I get home and think, “hey you know what world be relaxing? The most infuriating skill toy on the planet!”
