Yeah I usually pinwheel at least once after I throw hard, to get it under control before trapezing or entering whatever mount I’m going for.

ok but brandon isnt the best in the world by a good margin regardless of how good you may think he is. so one of two things is true, either better players than brandon before him and since have all chosen not to talk about this one thing…or brandon is misunderstanding/miscategorizing what happens during a throw. you really think option A is more likely? lol being better than someone else isn’t the same as being the best you can be and “trust me bro im a pro” isn’t good enough for me, i don’t care the source. people are wrong sometimes and nobody is infallible
im not sure what you mean with the pulling part. can you explain?
i relate it to pitching for example. if you watch a pitcher throw in slow mo the split second before the ball is released their hands roll up under the ball and it almost looks like the hand is ahead of the ball. the hand isnt “pulling” the ball. same when someone releases a yoyo, there’s a point where you will be swinging it by the string, you can’t throw a yoyo without swinging it by the string. but if you’re doing this early in the throw you aren’t imparting the same force you could if you followed through more with the hand

If you haven’t yet been put onto the yotricks ‘50 first tricks’ tutorials, I would strongly suggest you check it out. Available via what I consider to be a great app, named ‘Level up’ Will hold your hand right from the basics (put the string on, wind the yoyo, throw a sleeper etc), up until stuff you probably won’t be able to throw for years to come. Andrè has some great tutorials right here on YYE, but first I would build some solid, basic foundation’s via yotricks.

No I got to stop doing that. I’ve been buying yo-yos more than I’ve been practicing. To be honest with you, I’m actually looking for another one. I was looking for a zgrt durendal The medieval gold colorway I have a freaking habit now where I’m just constantly buying yo-yos. I think I bought six, seven, eight nine yo-yo so far in the last month and a half.
Starting today I told myself stop buying, yo-yo’s and start practicing. I’ve been playing with my sprout a lot but the problem is though is I’m having a hard time catching it because it comes up so fast and there’s very little room to catch like even just throwing straight down and binding. It comes up so damn fast that I usually miss the catch but no I want to take yo-yo serious. I want to really be good so I got a lot to learn and I got to stop sitting on here trying to buy everything

Just…one…more… But seriously man, get another one. A responsive. Something around 40mm wide. Doesn’t even matter if it’s not your dream throw. I got my kid an iyoyo passion to as his first metal. (Slightly undersized too) Learn the engineers wind up. Starting on a responsive will do wonders for the frustration of failed throws and manually winding until you get the snap start happening (don’t expect that to click for a while yet) Get comfortable managing string tension with the ‘sidewinder’. It’s all there on ‘level up’ man. Get to it.

i literally said to nathan i don’t want to argue. you haven’t countered or adressed a single thing I’ve said. you simply took issue with me daring to question the great brandon vu. im super happy for you if someone being good at something means you give them a free pass on everything they say. that’s not me. if you want to discuss throw mechanics im all ears. if all you got is “bro it’s brandon”, you’re right, there’s not much left to say

Step-straight and step-curve. That shape is my everything. I like organic shape for a nice relaxing throw though. Also popping out wrong on a gt and going “are you stuck step…” is a habit I probably need to break.

Well really the physics would just explain what they understand through their intuition, which I think is still interesting and could be useful for teaching others.
Are you talking about the green one? The green one is the featherspin ptarmigan.
As someone who plays yo-yo for fun, as a way to relax during a long break from sitting at work, or simply to enjoy some free time (and not even learn new tricks), I’ve always preferred O-shape yo-yos in monometal/monomaterial, or yo-yos with at least rounded edges.
But, to the point of TRULY PREFERRING and only considering that, I’ve never really had that preference. I like yo-yos in general and I collect yo-yos that I don’t even find that fun to play with, for example - but because I found it beautiful or i liked the story, the design, the color, and how all the elements came together in a single piece.
Since I consider myself 99% collector and 1% player.

Based on what I have, I tend to like modified V shapes. Most of the yo-yos I have are some interpretation of that shape, with touches of either H or O. I like more performant yoyos, but still want some good feels and modded Vs hit that for me.
Though I tend to avoid organics, O hybrids work for me if done right. Rainier, Yoshicuda X and Ptarmigan are all O hybrid shapes, either O/V or O/H

I love big organic throws. One of my favourite yo-yos is the Yoyofriends Ti Koi XL. One throw I really want to have is the UNPRLD Orange I believe it’s called. I love big organic yo-yos.

That one! Looks so incredible and fun to bring around. Definitely will purchase one sometime in the future. Waiting for the orange colour to come back in stock. Large organic throws are too fun, just so floaty and enjoyable to play with. The Ti Koi XL seems really similar to it and I love that throw to death.

So organic means that the contours on the yoyo are no angled, V, H, what have you — it means the profile is composed of organic contours. And geometries. In CAD, organic means not sharp, but rather a complex organic geometry that can’t be represented by simple lines and angles.
