I am from Philly. I left way before ‘jawn’ was a “thing” (yes pun intended). To me it sounds like the dumbest slang I have ever heard. It literally means “thing”? What is the advantage here? Seems like slang for the sake of slang.

Its just “joint” like a restaurant or bar or whatever. The accent and meaning just kept changing over time to where its now mostly any noun as long as people know what you mean

a jawn in yoyo refers to like the common high scoring tricks you’d see someone do on stage at a contest. a jawn kid is a young new yoyo player who only wants to learn these tricks and skips everything else in the process

I honestly think yoyo is the least gatekeepingish hobby I’ve ever been in. Especially cause the community is so small. My first contest I went to all the top tier players were super nice and didn’t seem anything like that. It’s the only hobby I know where you can message world champion level players and have a conversation or ask for advice on tricks.

Back on topic:
That time when you’re just chillin doin whatever tricks and then your bind doesn’t work, so huh maybe it’s spinning opposite for whatever reason and that bind doesn’t work so you try the normal way again and it’s like the thing doesn’t have pads in it. It spins out, you wind it up manually grumbling, and bang next bind is perfect. The rest of the nights the binds are completely normal and predictable.
