What is your biggest yoyo pet peeve?

When yoyoing off to the side in public and someone comes up to talk about it but are so close you can’t continue to throw without it hitting them

@jayce Sometimes people will get hit. That’s okay. Why should WE be the only ones getting smacked around?

I just assume I need to clean the bearing right away. Always.

So I won’t throw a new yoyo or open a package BST if i don’t have the time and such to go clean some bearings if needed.

That way I can never be disappointed

The gate keeping is so bad and it’s sad that people have no respect for the community

What gatekeeping are you talking about? I haven’t seen that so I am curious but I am definitely not saying you’re wrong or anything like maybe the community is like that in spaces I don’t engage with (reddit?)…just curious but yeah that does sound bad and sad.

It’s relevant with some of the newer generation at contests they will flame you for anything that isn’t Brent stole or “jawn” (note I’m 25) which really shows lack of respect to older people

Which “jawn” we should keep it in Philly not at yo-yo

What even is a “jawn” trick?

hmmm weird…every contest I have been to has been very kumbaya and I haven’t seen anyone flaming anyone else for their trick set. I know my bro @Phlox makes the most anti-jawn tricks and the jawn kids love them. but yeah that sucks. sorry you got flamed and felt like people were gatekeeping. I was just at a contest last weekend and didn’t see anything like that.

Bro i don’t even know it’s an misused word it’s meant to describe an object in philly or small thing(trinket)

Apparently liking Clyw makes me a glazer but i just like weird one off things god forbid something isn’t 60mm wide(this happened at Nats Philly)(note I like other brands with unique design philosophies like Atmos, canopy, recess,Jake bullock [need to get one], freshly dirty)

Lol…okay yeah it isn’t cool they made you feel unwelcome but yo, you are a grown adult. why care what some kid said? just flame them back and talk about their sketchy execution or how they can’t drive a car yet and live w their mom or smt…idk just doesn’t seem like the gatekeeping is so bad to me. kids will be kids?

I won’t buy a throw just for the anodizing, I refuse. I was buying a throw one time and someone said, “Remember, you’re buying artwork, not a YoYo.”

Did I miss something? Cause I’m pretty sure I’m buying a YoYo. Don’t get me wrong, kickarse anodizing is a real cool treat, but I’m still buying a YoYo. If it’s a crappy YoYo, no amount of ano is gonna make that better.

I have a couple plastic throws that are still in the packaging, really for display purposes usually. Or it’s one that has a memory attached for me or something. I have never, nor will I ever, buy a yoyo and not throw it. I throw them all. Like I said, pretty color ways are an awesome touch, but it’s still a just a YoYo.

P.s. I’m from Baltimore, spent a lot of time in Philly. Jawn isn’t just a trinket, it can be anything. Think of made up words like whatchacallit, dohicky, or thingamajig. Yes, it could be a trinket, it could be a chainsaw, it could be a YoYo. When someone says, hand me dat jawn. That’s what they’re talking about. I feel like people use jawn when they forget what something’s called. “Hand me that, that.. you know the, the friggen thing! That..jawn, yeah, that. Thanks”

Sometimes someone may say, ..finish this, we go back to the jawn. That could be, go back to the car or maybe go back to the bar or house or whatever..

It’s normally used in context with a person, place, or thing that usually has already been spoken bout earlier in conversation.

Yeah I know here in philly we use it for a lot of things (not just trinkets, i feel like we use it for places just as much as things), just never heard it to refer to a trick. Maybe like “hey can you teach me that jawn”

Yeah, that’ would work. You’re right though. Someone used the phrase “jawn tricks” as an adjective? That I didn’t understand.

What tricks are jawn tricks? What makes them so? Or am I just old, and in the way? :joy:
