Right as I was leaving for work today, a mailman I’ve never seen before parked right in front of my house. He got out of his little jeep and he went around to the back of the vehicle. I looked right at him and he looked right at me. He said hey sir, are you the guy that lives in that house? I said well, I am if you have a package from Canada for me.

He said, how did you know I’d have a package for you? Well… The tracking number says out for delivery and you’re the mailman and you’re in front of my house and there’s a package right there that has a Canadian looking sticker on it. I am a good Guesser, homie.

4:00 PM is the beginning of my lunchtime. So I decided to open the box.

Today is a good day. Very good day. Where else can I say? I guess I can show you better than I can tell you>>>

This is the exact combo I was trying to get before the Shopify nightmare I encountered lmao… looks great tho man. Excited for my gold, it’s apparently out for delivery as well as we speak.

Thanks for finding that, for some reason I had remembered hearing that too but had so much doubt in my head lol

Haha no problem, I had to do it for my sanity too - I didn’t want to say “First Base was designed by Jeff” without some proof.

Got my Inhaler in. Was writing some first impressions on the Inhaler thread and it kinda turned into a full length, in depth critique/review lmao. Here it is if you feel so inclined:

I appreciate all the time you put in reviewing the yo-yo. And I’m not saying that anything you said is inaccurate.

But that being said, your suggestions that with a couple tweaks it could be a perfect yo-yo or misdirected.

I say that for one simple reason. They deliberately designed it to be just the way it is. They have no shortage of design ideas. But they didn’t set up to make the perfect yo-yo. They set out to make just what the inhaler is. It’s a good yo-yo that challenges you not only pay attention but to work within its inherent limitations as a sort of challenging adventure.

They actually released a video… Kind of humorous and edgy but the video basically contains facts about the yo-yo. Does it have a concave bearing? No.
Will it’s been a long time? No.
Does it have rim weight? No.
And…… the dialogue in the video just spells it out.

Charles even made up an excellent video specifically using the Inhaler to show ‘it can play’.

Obviously he is not the average player. But he certainly doesn’t seem to be having any difficulty with spin time, stability, it’s lack of rim weight, etc…

Never made a mention it was high tech… no mention it would be a good yo-yo for everybody…. Said nothing about it being a Comp level beast….

The Inhaler is ‘exactly’ what they wanted it to be. A good yo-yo, lacking all the normal bells and whistles of modern yoyo technology.

A modernized ole school yoyo/player adds skill and has fun.

Your review makes it sound like they ‘fell short’.

Small boutique Company… lacking funds to do more research and more protos, etc…

Incorrect. And completely baseless.

They did what they set out to do.

Philosophy Time (yeah, I’m bored tonight)

I guess yoyo reviews are like movie reviews, or book reviews in that there’s always this underlying question of, “Does the author’s intent matter?” (in terms of the validity of a review) lurking under the surface. In the case of a yoyo, the equivalent question might be, “Does the designer’s intent matter?” Some say it does, others do not.

For those who feel the author is just another reader who has no special authority over the meaning of the work, nor any meaningful control over how it will be experienced or interpreted, the only things that matter are each reader’s individual thoughts and reactions. The work can’t be evaluated on the basis of what the author hoped to achieve or expected the reader to get out of it since there’s no guarantee that every reader will experience the work the way the author intended.

On the other hand, for those who feel the author is the supreme authority on the meaning and purpose of their work, the reader’s experience and interpretation can be regarded as somewhere on the spectrum of “correct” to “incorrect” depending on how far it strays from reflecting the author’s goals. From this perspective, it is the reader’s obligation to “get it right” and be smart enough/insightful enough/whatever to parse out the expected response, and it’s not the author’s fault if that doesn’t happen.

I think reality probably lies somewhere in between these two extremes–which in the realm of literary criticism would be called Reader Response Theory vs. Authorial Intent Theory, but in the realm of yoyoing might be called Player Experience Theory vs. Designer Intent Theory. I think the designer can have a particular goal in mind, and work very hard to yield a product that delivers the hoped-for experience, but how well they succeed in doing so can probably be measured by how many players have that experience and are thus able to appreciate the yoyo for what the designer envisioned.

Well put.

Everyone’s entitled to how they want their purchases to feel and play but we shouldn’t assume or dismiss effort in prototyping, design and testing.

Hey, some interesting discussion here

I think it’s totally valid to give a critique that suggests that something might be improved even if the work (yoyo, or whatever) fulfilled the creator’s intentions.

That said, my POV is from an art and science background where such constructive (and sometimes even harsh) criticism is part of the whole thing.

This is exactly what I was trying to say - sometimes my thoughts don’t come out as well as I want over text and someone else puts it way better than I could. So thanks haha

That said, the more I throw the Inhaler, the more I enjoy it, it’s a fun yoyo for sure. I popped a DS in there, and it improved quite a bit IMO. It also was kinda slippy but I threw a fatter string in there and it became just the right amount of grabby. Still considering siliconing it but we’ll see.

Mr. Difeo is still killing it… beautifully machined and polished, adjustible weight from 62 to 68 grams with weight rings, raised outer rim edges and schmoove grooves.
