I’d also like to know your thoughts on the NED show after reading this: The Insider: Two big thumbs down for NED school assembly....
I saw it in my school and i did a kamikaze to show her up and she’s like but look i can do “walk the dog” lol she was ticked
I believe the standard opinion among demonstrators are that it sucks and actively dissuades schools from bringing in any other yoyo based assembly.
A few years back, the NED storm had hit my niece’s elementary school, except for my niece’s class (Kindergartners didn’t get a chance to go to the assembly). It was arranged for me to do a small demo for the kindergarten classes. My whole goal of the demo was exactly what it was, show the kids some yoyo tricks, show them what can be done on such a simple toy.
Turned out that the teachers in the classes I did the demo for actually liked my presentation and variety of tricks better (even in the intermediate section of tricks I knew at the time). As a final encore, I was taken to the special ed class to show them some tricks when I somehow magically figured out how to Matrix very smoothly.
In the end, the students were happy.
Now as far as the NED program, I don’t see anything wrong with getting kids into timeless toys as yoyoing is quite a healthy habit. At least they aren’t selling video games or things to make kids fat at school…instead, while it’s a merchandising thing as the outraged parent said, it’s something that does have its hidden message - to never give up, practice, etc.
My run in with the NED show was when the local high school called all the homeschoolers in and sat us down and forced us to watch this mediocre guy try to sell a $20 puke on a string with ned’s face on it that he said was a special edition.
To top his performance of he said he was going to do the hardest trick in the world (apparently shoot the moon is incredibly hard). Afterward i just stood up and started yoyoing on the stage. It was a much better performance then the guy trying to sell the ned yoyos… literally the only thing he was trying to do was not help kids yoyo but try to sell the ned yoyos…
the ned yoyos are just rebranded yoyos from duncan that dont really work that well. Then they charge ridiculous amounts for these yoyos and say they are the best yoyos ever made. NED is just lying through their teeth to get the sales up and more money. AngryGumball you performance was probably tons better then the Ned guys was…
Yea sounds like the NED performance needs a facelift. They’re selling yoyos from the late 90s from when SuperYo was popular. The Cosmic Spin is a rebranded Renegade last I knew.
…I can only imagine what would happen now if I did that same demo, with the current tricks I know.
I hate NEDS.
I was yoyoing in Subway one day in a small town on my Fed Ex route, and a couple saw me and said their kids went to a NED show, and got two yoyos. both broke within two days.
Shamelessly hawking garbage yoyos from the 90’s…makes me ticked off.
No excuse–They should be selling yyj classics, kicksides, or yyf velocities / Onestars. You know, great beginner yoyos that DON’T break, and can be easily upgraded for modern tricks.
the whole show gives real yoyo demonstrators a bad name. Everyone on the boards here could easily do all the tricks they do, and NEDS does nothing to promote the modern sport of yoyo.
I don’t know. I know their yoyos are bad, but it’s what got me into yoyo in the first place, what was that 8 years ago? I liked it, then forgot about yoyos until I discovered unresponsive a year ago
I remember when my niece came home with an auto return NED (which sounded like it was ready to fall apart) which sparked my interest to find a yoyo and get back into throwing…little did I realize how much things had changed from the 90s.
The NED show has a special place in my heart. I loved that assembly as a kid, I looked forward to it every year.
I got my first yoyo from them, at the time (2001), they sold SuperYo Renegades, I got a black one. I spent every recess playing with a yoyo. Even after the hype died down I still kept at it. Without the NED show, I wouldn’t have picked up this amazing hobby. Maybe I lucked out though because the guy who came to my school was pretty good at yoyos. He taught me a few basic pictures tricks as well. I think the NED show is great for elementary school kids, but any older and they would think it was lame.
It was pretty bad all he could do was around the world but at the time i thought it was prety cool
My school assembly had a guy with a glow-in-the-dark jump rope.
my thoughts:
The NED show does what it says, and advertises and eventually trickles down and gets more kids into yoyoing somewhat. Honestly i don;t find a problem with it it’s like slusny doing SpinKing except on a much, much larger scale and their own brand of yoyos to cater just to this type of event.
Honestly what I go out of that old blog post was a helicopter mom that just complains all day over her son’s assemblies in school (and probably spends too much time researching them as well), which she probably had no help in organizing or anything. Honestly, I can’t take that post seriously she’s probably one of the mom’s that seriously thinks that vaccines cause autism.
This.
I got a chance to see the program at the school my wife use to teach at, it was absolutely awful. I came in to her class the next day and did a much better and more educational version.
Kyle
At least I could say that the NED show got me into the yoyo community.
bump
Please refrain from needlessly bumping your topics. Rest assured that people will weply if they have any desire at all. If not, the topic should rightfully filter to the bottom of the heap.
Thanks

I get what the mom is saying.
Trying to sell stuff to our kids (especially when it’s crap) is annoying.
It sounds like that’s what the demo was all about, and if that’s the case, then it’s not very appropriate for the school. If that was the plan, then the NED guys should at least donate a percentage of sales to the school or something. Then the school would actually benefit somehow.
Or maybe a science lesson on the physics of the yoyo. That would at least tie yoyos in.
Of course I have never seen the show so I can’t speak with certainty.
Dale Oliver created a Science of Spin program a number of years ago that’s still active.
Yeah, this looks a lot more academically sound.*
