NED got me started on yoyo, so I guess I can’t complain

I was at my local Walgreens earlier (waiting for a prescription) and was tossing the Orca. The one behind me mentions “man, you make it look so simple and effortless, I was lucky if I could get the yoyo to come down.” Later she mentioned to her kids about how they had the yoyo people come to their school and mentioned to me about how all the kids managed to get it to sleep. I immediately thought of the NED show.

Further thinking of the performance, I see its good and bad. THe good being that it’s a gateway for kids to get into yoyoing, and then they’ll realize there’s better yoyos out there, and then will find YYE, sign up to be a member, and get their first serious throw. The bad is that the performance is misunderstood and both kids and parents think the whole thing is about yoyoing and selling throws that they feel are overpriced…but back to the good side, the yoyo tricks stand out to the kids and inspires them to learn, to “Never Give Up, Encourage Others, Do Your Best” which can be applied to throwing. Perhaps the lack of mind blowing tricks will spark their curiosity to look up “yoyo tricks” on Youtube and go from there.

I will say one thing. The NED Boomerang is basically identical with the Yomega Brain.

thats because the ned boomerang is a rebrand of the pocket pro boomerang which is a rebrand of the brain…

Yomega and Alecto for the win.

Yeah a lesson on the physics of yoyoing will be really cool in my opinion. Though in that case the target audience will have to be high schoolers or above since they are rather complicated. Actually that would be cool wouldn’t it? Teaching physics while advocating the sport of yoyoing. Oh why hasn’t this been done in a wider scale yet…

Duncan tried in '03.

It appears to me that NED is a bad way (salesmen trying to sell crappy yo-yo’s) to get people into a good thing (yo-yoing itself). If we had people like Tyler Severance (who does these kind of demonstrations) going around in place of NED we would definitely have more yo-yoers, and I imagine that the program run be the Tylerites would be immensely more successful.

Remember Ooch from Yomega has gone to do some performances at schools.

We actually did this in my 6th grade class (1997). It all started with the teacher buying a class a Duncan yoyo (after seeing an interest in yoyoing at my elementary school - thanks me for smuggling the Yomega Brain to school one day  ). We kicked off by watching a How to Yoyo video by Arne Dixon and then went out onto the playground to practice what we learned (picture trick practice while watching the video was all done with a dead yoyo since there was not enough room to make it sleep in class). That final week of school, we did the whole “science with yoyos” thing and did a sleeper contest at the end.

Crap dude, 6th grade in '97? I feel old now.

Way to get your peers into throwing though!

Name a bunch of ball bearing yoyos that play much better than the ‘‘professional ball bearing’’ Cosmic Spin. I’ll start: Mosquito, Butterfly XT, Pro Z, Raider, Speedaholic, One, Whip, PSG, Hubstack, Velocity, Classic, F.A.S.T 201, Replay Pro & this is only a fraction of them.

NED is what got my grand daughter and I into yoyoing. I yoyo’d as a kid and she bought a crappy brain type yoyo from NED. Yes, the yoyo’s they sell are garbage. My grand daughter won’t even put her NED yoyo in her yoyo case now. But it got us both into yoyoing and it’s something that we do together.

She now has several yoyos. Let’s see if I can remember them all:
The NED clutch style yoyo which she never plays with.
A YYF FAST 201 (Her first real yoyo)
A YYF Velocity
A Duncan Flipside (she never plays with this one)
A YYF One (She’s the Queen of “Round The World” with this yoyo. I think her record is 28 loops and still returning it to her hand)
A Duncan Metal Drifter (Until recently, her favorite yoyo)
A YYF Replay (which I promised to buy her if she could do 10 binds on my Replay. So she learned the bind in one day)
A Magic Yoyo N12 Shark (her new favorite yoyo)
My old YYF Grind machine.

She will practice a single move for months. She still does the trapeze and Lindy Loop every time we play together and she’s fine with that. She’s working on trapeze and his brother and will try that 100 times in a row. Somehow, she doesn’t get bored with the same trick as I do.

We’ve also gone to our local yoyo club meet ups. It’s just another thing we can do to spend quality time together.

And all of happened because of her interest with the NED show. So yeah, they yoyos may not be very good, but look at all the good that came from it.

I’m gonna name more yoyos that play better than the NED Cosmic Spin: Protostar, Counter Attack, DV888, N12, T5, N9, N11, Token, Project, Rebirth, Y-Factor, Genesis, Superstar, MVP etc…

I know some more- Imperial, Butterfly, Pocket Pros Zombie, any dollar store yoyo, my rock tied to a string

Remember these guys sell super yo renegades . The yoyo that changed the world of yoyoing. I wouldn’t call all of their yoyos garbage.
