I respect that, and I agree with your philosophy completely. I guess I baby those two I mentioned because they have sedimental value, other than that for the rest of em it’s like oh well
I always try to get two of each yoyo. One to keep pristine and one to play.
While this is a great idea, its not really practical.
So… I play with all my yoyos. If it is difficult to replace, over carpet and carefully. If I have a copy or easily replaceable, let her rip tatter chip.
I don’t play over surfaces that can ding very often. For the longest I was annoyed by adding vibe to certain yoyos by hitting them off things. My shooting star has took a beating and def vibes alot more than when I got it. It was a bummer for a couple days and made me not want to use it. Given time though, I really don’t care all that much about vibe unless it’s to a serious degree hurting the playability.
Wait, you guys actually PLAY your yoyos?
My kids drop test everything in my life including my yo-yos. I don’t own anything that I would be devastated to get a ding or otherwise damaged in some way.
For me it’s not the cosmetic aspect, I’ll keep the beater I just want to have option to know I can easily find a new one more than minutes after the initial drop.
A bit close to a trailer hitch. Still drives well.
Don’t really care about dings but I’m absolutely terrified of spiking a Yoyo into the ground and having it develop pulse vibe. Don’t really care about normal vibe but pulse vibe is scary bc I know I wouldn’t want to throw that Yoyo anymore. Thought I had pulse vibe once but the bearing just wasn’t seated properly and that feeling of “ooo dang what did I do” was devastating. I always throw in the apartment over rugs or this weight lifting mat bc then I don’t have to be concerned about messing them up. I also don’t really play in public much except 4a and 5a and 5a over grass now only bc why not like it’s easy enough to find a grassy spot near me. I will say that when I do on the rare occasion want to bring a 1a Yoyo with me out in public, I just bring the monometals bc I would be sad to mess up a bimetals ring alignment.
Don’t really know if I have had the thought that certain Yoyos are special bc all my stuff is newish and was available online retail when I bought it and there are a million good yo-yos so I could probably find a near replacement for anything. I don’t really go for collecting for the sake of it or seeking specific yo-yos or anything…yet! Maybe I will one day. I just don’t want to waste money so I try to be careful.
In my responsive yo-yo world, not so much. Our picking tend to slim and fleeting.
I’d agree with you about numerous choices for unresponsive.
If your throws are not dinged then your not playing hard enough. No go practice. Everywhere.
honestly, most of my throws only get played over carpet. i like the look of them and I want to preserve them as much as possible. they still get played with, all of my throws get played with, but i’m cautious with most of them. then there are the ones that can get to go out into the world, the ones that have obvious marks and dings of play outside. maybe a dozen fall into this category. plastics, like the Speedaholic XX or the Big Dipper or metals that have been dinged like the Meerkat and the Echo. I’ll play these over the driveway without caution. which is nice. but, when I drop some $$ on a throw, I like to keep it nice. until it meets a hard surface in an unexpected incident. then things change…
as long as we’re throwing, why does it really matter where?
enjoy the throw my friends.

This is so true. “We” pine over the few responsive throws that make it on the boards and often the big drops sell out in hours to minutes. The very very few wood yo-yos that are made out there are gone quick too. There are wood throws I cherish and rarely leave there pouch but I still play them occasionally because it must be something I play on occasion to stay in my collection.
The individual yoyo I’m using doesn’t matter, what matters is the skills I’ve accumulated along the way.
If I theoretically lost/destroyed my favorite yoyo and couldn’t find a replacement, it really wouldn’t change how I play yoyo at all. With that in mind, there’s no reason to limit myself with any yoyo.
*on the yoyo
Hardwood floor didn’t stand a chance.
Shhhh, don’t tell my wife that mark was from me!
I bought some laminate restore and wood tone restore markers just cause I keep hitting a few spots in the floor…
What’s your grail?
Oh it was the A-RT Holy Grail.
