One of these days I need to run by Woodcraft and pick up some wood more suited for this kind of project. Oak isn’t nearly dense enough for the weight or finish that I would like. I’m currently looking at Argentine Lignum Vitae, Mora, Jobillo, and Purpleheart (my top pick at this point).
I did make it, Dingo54. It’s not playable due to the wood used so I wouldn’t attempt to sell it. Like I said, one of these days I need to get some denser wood and see what I can come up with. Mainly, I just saw this thread and wanted to challenge my turning skills.
You good Sir, is what I love about this forum! I strongly encourage you to try to make a working prototype! I would love to see it if you finish one, let lone would gladly like to throw it. Also it makes me feel fantastic to see that you saw my thread and then you went and started a fantastic project I could only dream of! sorry for the sappy-ness but I think that its awesome.
Ok, so you all do understand that by quoting hadoq’s comment about yoyo insert naughty fluffy bunnies here, you are just contributing to the inappropriateness of it and not really changing the fact that it’s “inappropriate” for this forum, right? Ignoring the comment or having it deleted would be a better choice if it upsets you that much.
That is awesome. I think from a nostalgia standpoint this would just be awesome to have if it can be made to look awesome. Even if it doesn’t play well, that is fine, just long as you CAN throw it and bind it and make it work.
For this year’s Homecoming dance at my Alumni here in Florida I brought in Jon Martin as a yoyo street performer to add to the theme that we did so I’m thinking I can talk to the shop class teacher who is the same as when I was there at high school and see if they would try to make one. They might have the tools to do so. Jon was a huge hit so I could see the kids wanting to try it. I bet I could talk to One Drop and get the specs say for the Code 1 or something and see if they can use those for the wood cutting machines. Or maybe just try to make something very simple. I love the idea. The key point is making it playable. And if anyone is going to make any money doing this instead of just as a hobby for fun, then they will probably cost a lot of money. Either that or the person creating this hopefully is prepared to spend a good chunk of change and time for the sheer science and gratitude from all of us Ok Ok I won’t get back into that topic again
If you could make it a reality, I say do it! and For the weight issue, if you took the rim and cut a channel into it and place a weight right and put a circular piece of wood over it to keep the “Natural” look. I quick made a model on SketchUp.
I don’t know much about woodworking, but depending on the wood and the finish, having a brass or silver-metal ring inlaid into a grove could look very nice and classy without a need to cover it up.
I don’t really get the “offensive” thing, maybe I need to explain it a little
in car forums or racing forums, there are very very very good artists, car designers or photographers. and whenever someone comes up with a beautiful photo of a beautiful car, it’s said to be “car porn”, why this? because it suggests envy, desire to actually have, possess this car. The “porn” word then relates to “almost instinctive desire to possess or play with”. A really strong, uncontrollable desire, much like, well, you know what I mean, now if I went into more details this could be considered offensive which is why I won’t.
The concerns about the weight isn’t a huge issue if you know what you are doing. Most of the wood yo-yos I have seen and played with are made with Cocobolo, which has a density of roughly* 1.1 g/cm. Argentine Lignum Vitae, a wood known for its extreme density, is around 1.3 g/cm. Delrin, a material that has been used extensively by Crucial and others, only has a density of 1.4 g/cm. Given that the Milk 2% weighs in at 68.3 grams, with a little math we can know that if it were to be made with Cocobolo with zero design changes it would weigh in at roughly 54 grams. That’s lighter than most yo-yoers might like, but that’s four grams heavier than the Pacquiao and with a little bit of design work you could easily get it up to more a useable weight.
Weight rings made from aluminum, brass, etc. are also a great option. I know there were concerns about them looking ugly, but I’ve seen some inspirational work involving wooden yo-yos and aluminum weight rings. It’s too bad the guy that did that disappeared after only making a couple. EDIT: This is what I’m talking about.
*I say roughly because wood does not have a definite density, unlike metals and plastics.
