Unpopular Yoyo Opinions

Another point I noticed is that boutique companys seem to make more unique designs and colorways, a lot of CLYW, YYF, and others just look bland and boring. most yoyos these days are rrally good it just comes down to preference.

This part is crazy, boutique brands aren’t nearly as innovative as big brands in terms of design work. They don’t have the mass to tolerate a design being a dud, so they stick to largely tried and true concepts. Could you provide some examples of innovative boutique designs?

I got one: The Shutter is one of my favorite yoyos, if not my favorite.

Sue me!

I will not sue you. There’s a perfect / favorite yoyo for everyone.

Second layer here is picking a QC and sticking to it. It’s hard to stick to it when you start throwing parts away that don’t pass. You quickly drop all the way back down to the break even point, so it’s tempting to allow the “close” ones through to make a profit. And knowing most ppl will still be happy with those.

Yoyo reviewers always demonstrate whether a yoyo is good for grinds or finger spins but I can’t remember the last time a person outside of a yoyo review even mentioned or posted a video of grinds or finger spins.

Alright I got a good one:

A wide yoyo does not necessarily make bangers easier (vertical not horizontal, a wide yoyo definitely helps with horizontal).

I guess that’s why my opinion is unpopular.

Yeah, I wondered about that before as well. Reviewers talk about grinds and fingerspins as if they were still trendy or something.

What’s worse is that most of them can’t do decent grinds or fingerspin tricks, and so can’t really demonstrate how/if the yoyo is any good for that. Moreover, anyone who does those kinds of tricks a lot can tell just by inspection if a yoyo will be suitable for such; reviewers are (again) not telling them anything they can’t figure out for themselves from photos and specs.

Dude, the Shutter is an excellent yoyo. I have a regular WA, a championship WA, and a Butter; all are fantastic yoyos. They play like a breeze and I love them. Im not surprised that this could be your favorite.

Honestly I do grinds and thumb grinds all the time. They are satisfying tricks to land smooth, even if they aren’t the most photogenic. I love jamming with a yoyo for a while, realizing it can thumb-grind, and then just throwing one up. Im not sure if others do this, but if a yoyo can thumb grind, i’ll always be teased to do so at least once. As for fingerspins, i’ve never tried it on something that didn’t have hubstacks, so I can’t relate, but it is nice if a yoyo has this option. Though reviewers do tend to try to prove to me that a yoyo with a frickin spike in it can be fingerspun, and at that point I already know that it isn’t a fingerspin friendly yoyo.

lol, true. Im relatively amateur level on grinds, but aside from a select few, I can IRG and grind better than most reviewers who I think play on a higher level than me. People still post tricks of grinds though. I learned a rather sexy grind bind from one of @EOS44 videos that is just an absolute banger finish.

Such disdain for reviewers! Love you guys, too

Reviewers are wonderful people. I just don’t find (most) reviews useful. They can still be entertaining though!

Nah dude, your reviews are completely on point for those of us who just throw casually. When it comes to review clichés, I think reviewers like throws and brews tbh.

Absolutely. I appreciate what they are doing. Some people like reviews I’m sure. At the end of the day though I feel like I would need to throw the yoyo myself to establish any sort of opinion that has use to me.

Also, reviewers typically do their reviews with yoyos set up more or less as they come out of their boxes. However, I don’t usually leave stock bearings in, I sometimes replace the response pads immediately if the stock pads are slippy, and I have very specific string (and string length) that I like to use which may be very different from what the reviewer uses. Consequently, my experience with a yoyo will likely be quite different from that of reviewers, making it almost pointless to make any decisions based on what they show/say.
