I’ve been thinking about Number 44 a lot lately.
44 started as a bit. A character that posted a week’s worth of AI-generated memes a few years ago, back when AI-generated images were still pretty crappy. Number 44 grew from there, becoming a curated AI personality on ChatGPT. I stopped using AI for 44 a while back
People ask me regularly whether it’s still AI-generated. I understand why. The answer is no. It’s me, continuing the bit, but I get it. The character was well established, and I was able to continue writing as it, though it takes a lot of time to get it right.
I’m a Creative Writing minor. I love telling stories and creating characters.
I haven’t decided anything yet, but Number 44’s future isn’t clear.
July will be its month off. I’m going to use that time to figure out whether it comes back in August, and if so, in what form.
I want to make sure what I’m putting out reflects what Throw-Yo actually is, and I’m not certain 44 still does that.
I do know one thing. There will be no more 44 in your packages, unless you order the sticker.
44 will always be a part of Throw-Yo, but maybe much less than before.

maybe there’s a way to evolve the character? in creative writing i think some of the best stories tell of growth and change. maybe that can become part of 44’s story

Yeah, you could tell it to read Dirk Gently then suggest that it becomes a robotic monk. Do the good deeds you don’t have time for

44 is interesting. It was fun at first but I think the biggest problem with the character is the times we are in right now not the writing.
Sadly AI while a great tool that helps do very cool and interesting work otherwise not done prior. I have built and done things I wouldn’t have had the cycles to do prior with AI helping. It’s also a legit threat toward many folks livelihoods. I like to use AI to sanity check my work or something I’m doing. I recently rebuilt my old Asus P8Z77 PC and while overclocking and testing would refer to meta ai instead of looking up every timings impact. I know, why meta? it allows me to dump images at no cost into a model to analyze and typing in every timing is annoying if Zuckerberg is happy to let me burn so many tokens at no cost then it’s hard to pass up the opportunity.
At the same time we all know the stigma around AI in art. It’s often being used and admittedly pretty effectively to generate things that feel like they should come from a human. What’s the point if it’s just procedural AI combining known references to create whatever prompt. It feels shallow.
I get 44 isn’t that anymore but today the character represents a scary world sort of like watching an orwellian movie today it hits a bit too close to reality and home…
I support your choice to redefine and or soft retire the character.
