The Remanufactured Butterfly Project

Greetings!

I’m embarking on a project and I need your help.

As some of you may know, I’m a fan of both the Duncan Butterfly and 3D printing. I’ve recently found that I rather enjoy printing new halves for the metal axle found in Duncan Butterflies and Imperials. I haven’t found a way to source the axles other than buying new yo-yos, but I really like the new Butterflies, so I wouldn’t want to buy them just to harvest axles.

So I need you to send me your spares axles and your broken Butterflies and Imperials, so I can give them a second life.

I’m really interested in experimenting with this form, so I’m planning on producing a unique design for every axle.

Here’s my offer:

If you send me 2 or more Duncan axles or broken Butterflies or Imperials, I will send you back 1 unique metal fixed axle 3D printed plastic yoyo, free of any other charge, in the CONUS.

If you send me 1 axle and $5 (to cover my shipping), I will send you back 1 unique metal fixed axle 3D printed plastic yoyo in the CONUS

All extra axles will be used to make unique metal axle 3D printed plastic yo-yos for sale on this thread for $15.

Feel free to DM me any questions or offers. If you have a rather large lot of Duncan axles I’m willing to buy them from you.

These are my first two Remanufactured Butterflies, #0 (right) and #1 (left). These two are my personal ones and aren’t for sale but just to give you an idea. I have about 4 designs in the queue waiting for axles, and most of them start to stray pretty far from “Butterfly” in both shape and size

Are you printing in plastic or metal? The prototypes look like they’re plastic.

Plastic. The metal axles are from Duncan fixed axle yo-yos.

Looks great! I may have some axles, will have to search though. What’s the weight of the #1?

I don’t know that I’ve actually weighed #1. This one is incredibly similar to #0 which is 51g.

I’m in. Do you want Freehand pieces as well?

I was only planning to work on the fixed axles but if you didn’t want them I’d give them a try.

This is an awesome idea! I should have two axels, expect a dm from me soon
(Maybe not I’ll have to check  )

#2 is for sale. The halves are bell shaped, with the widest diameter above the rim. 53g, and should be around 57mm wide and just under 40mm wide. I will verify dimensions with calipers later. This Remanufactured Butterfly uses the American made Butterfly axle, which is basically just a straight metal dowel with textured ends and smoothed center.

@pyrotechnic might have some axles left over from mods.

Already sent my extras to him

Well I’ve already learned a valuable lesson in this project and it’s that there’s a ton of variance between Duncan axles and that I should re-measure each axle for each design.

Good to get a lesson like this in early

This is why I haven’t sent you an axle I have three different sized axles somehow lol. I assumed I had them from various throws but maybe they are all butterfly

Just means I have to measure twice

Butterfly XTs work? I have a few extras from when I’ve needed emergency string on the road.

For this project I’m focused on fixed axles. If you were sending fixed axles I would also take XTs but I don’t need XTs alone.

i probably have a bunch of axles you can use, i’ll dig around…
