The 0A Thread (Fixed Axle & Modern Responsive)

I’ve heard people say “Cold Fusion” was the hardest trick of the late 90s… but I think it would have been Split the Atom. (I’ve done Cold Fusion on a Fixie, but not Split the Atom)

…I’ve only done it once out of many, many attempts…

This is 100% NOT meant to come off old-head gate-keepy… but I do feel Split the Atom should be in every fixie player’s toolkit. I mean it was invented on fixed (unlike Cold Fusion - which like you said is perfectly doable on wood as well). I no longer think it’s important to be able to hit whatever ultra-hard 1a trick on fixed, but I think Split the Atom teaches certain mechanics which make the rest of a player’s 0a feel more natural. I also think it’s just a beautiful trick on wood because it needs a certain precision.

TL;DR Thx, but it’s not too crazy (or shouldn’t be anyway).

Currently, I cannot land StA on a Fixie–right now I’m working on Bermuda Triangle. (super fun on a Fixie!)

I can totally respect this point of view - but that flashy combo on no regen - that’s a LOT of spin. Clearly I need more practice. I also don’'t have any cool woodie, just a Confusion Fixie Conversion - with super thick pads that are causing me some grief on combos.

you have a buttafly tho!

@megachicken289 thanks for helping find the tuts!

It’s not much, but it’s honest work

If you mean me - I got it out to try stalls on it and see if I could love it again - and half flew off - seems it’s been taken apart one too many times. May have to snag one off Amazon and hope it’s a newer mould version.

can you super glue it? if not getting a new one is a must!

I think I’m going to just do both - superglue it and snag another.

While there are currently no sources for the thick orange pads that come on the Confusion, you can get the YYF white (unresponsive) pads. What I did on my Confusion that worked well was to replace 1 of the thick pads with a thin white pad. You may want to give that a try. If you’re careful pulling the thick pad off you can reuse it.

So I have the white pads actually - was debating swapping them - but I’ve never done a 1 and 1 setup. I’ve seen folks suggest it. Does it not give you inconsistent results? Can’t get my head around 1 side of the yoyo being thicker response than the other. I may have to give this a try.

I’m also eagerly awaiting a MR85 blank to arrive to convert my Origen to Fixie - hoping I like how that throws.

I promise that if it gave inconsistent results I would not suggest it. I will say that on my Confusion I coupled this change of pads with a narrow 3mm bearing. But my thoughts were that using a fixed blank as you are, you would benefit in the same way. All it results in is opening the gap wider so that snags become a thing of the past. If you are running a 4mm blank it’s possible that you may experience some inconsistencies. However, I have no way to confirm that at present.

I am running a 4mm blank - but I have all of $11 (including shipping) in this Confusion so I could always go back to the bearing if I don’t like the 4mm blank with the 1/1 pads. I’m leaning toward giving it a shot.

One thing is for certain… those thick pads intrude on the gap in a major way. But with a bearing it kinda needs that to respond constantly. If you carefully remove the one thick pad then you can always put it back if you don’t like it.
