I just started about 6 months ago and have a Sage Yoyo I am using in responsive mode. So far the only string I have found that will allow me to do string tricks is the type 6 poly from Yoyo Expert. I have tried a couple different strings and so far they all bind up when attempting any string tricks. Is this typical of the Sage? Are there some other strings that are thin enough to use on this yoyo? As far as I can tell the response pads and bearing are in good condition since the yoyo is new.
This is typical of a narrow gap in a responsive set up, what tricks are you trying? Anything with layers of string will quickly bind up a responsive
What other strings have you tried? Thicker strings are more popular, so you may have to specially ask for thin string recommendations. Knowing which strings you have tried that are too thick may help narrow it down.
If the YYE string works, there is nothing wrong with sticking with it.
I have tried Kitty String Normal and Zipline Business Class. So far just working on easier tricks like Brain Twister, Trapeze, Split Bottom Mount. I’ll probably stick with the YYE string. I just got a Shutter for unresponsive play and have found it like the Kitty Fat the best. till a complete Noob.
I think you’ll have fewer issues with the shutter, but if you want to keep exploring thinner strings and/or other nylon options:
Pea Soup fleecy is relatively thin, comparable to Zipline executive class in my experience.
Big Red offers a thin gauge for most of their strings, the nylon strings are maybe a bit thicker than executive class but the 100% nylon gives a different feel so I use it in some of my gripper throws.
Throw-Yo also offers different gauges, and their “performance” strings seem to be thinner than their “comfort” strings, and still have a really nice weight to them.
Enjoy the rabbit hole!
I am liking the Shutter. I have Kitty XL strings on it now and I am getting more proficient with binding all the time.
