I’m not the best one to answer this. I don’t really have a dedicated string type or company I use usually. Most of the time I actually just use whatever comes with the yoyo, But I haven’t had to change to thin or anything at least.
It’s super smooth feeling on your finger. I was just checking and consistently getting about 4 - 4.5 second grinds on my finger while still getting a dismount and bind return. This is actually pretty good for me though, keep in mind I have thick fingers, and live in FL, so there’s always some degree of humidity even in the house, haha.
So far I have tried the following strings, which I’m ordering by thickness (to my eye):
Markmont “tech thin” Night Moves, Draken & Blue Eyed White Dragon formulas
One Drop bulk
Markmont “regular” Night Moves & Night Dragon formulas
Pop String
Zipline Smoothie
Zipline Executive Class Light
G2 Diamond Blend
Zipline Skyline III
I tested each with both the Flying Lemon and Parlay. They seem basically equivalent to me. The rare snaggy element occurred with both. And these were cases where high wall organic would not be a good selection in the first place.
I should also say that #s 1 and 3 have been my go-to for a long time. Someone used to thicker string might have even fewer issues. To the degree that technique can help here, mine has been neglected.
It stands to reason that a narrower gap is going to be some degree less forgiving, but I don’t think the Flying Lemon is significantly disadvantaged.
I recommend some Zipline Ep20/20 or Markmont Drakens myself. I have some drakens on a Snack and Panorama and it really makes a difference for those particular throws.
My collection is pretty well filled up. Now, I only purchase throws that are unique and excite me. (I am still waiting for a re-release of the El-Tio).
This throw is like lemonade, I am definitely excited.
Looking forward to the YYE availability announcement!
Hey Glen, a question… out of curiosity: have you only made the Flying Lemon in 7075 aluminum or have you tried the design with another type of aluminum? Thank you:)
I like the blast for grinds, personally. I think it’s better than a good majority of my yoyos as far as grindability goes. As far as most things go, really.
I’ve been playing mine with ZS.air mostly and I don’t find it too grabby. I also tried polyesque from ZipLine and the poly string that Glen sent with it . The regular poly was slightly more grabby, but still completely playable. Just required a teensy bit more focus. The polyesque didn’t seem to have any problems with snags.
I got a sick kid atm, but if I get time tomorrow, I’ll test some alpha line and kitty string on it.
