I hadn’t seen those, that’s funny because it’s a titanium yoyo released with a pvd coating for really cheap and profits going to charity.
This sounds vaguely familiar.
There are no original ideas
So it looks like it did use a PVD coating as well. It’s apparently a different PVD coating (you can apply almost any kind of metal or ceramic as a coating using pvd)
One other difference I’m finding between this and the TiVayder is this will be blasted which should provide additional adhesion of the pvd compared to a smooth finish. Hopefully improving it’s durability compared to that one.
I love @codinghorror if I am releasing a cheap grade 5 titanium yoyo with a PVD coating and giving all profits to charity and he already had the idea before that is just me borrowing from his Stack Overflow.
You may end up right. My shop thinks it should be durable on impact, but I can’t predict the future. The Ultem was a disaster, the durability made them shatter at the axle being unusable. The good news is the worst case scenario on these isn’t shattering into a million pieces it’s some visual wear and tear.
PVD has been done I think once before with a different formula, I now know, but not this particular Titanium Nitride ceramic and not on a blasted finish. So we are in new adventure territory and I fear attempting to push the envelope and try new things in yo-yo is my kryptonite. So worst case scenario is we raise a bunch of money to a worthy charity, and a lesson is learned and next time I do the safer bet of electrochemical ano instead.
just kidding worst case is I just spent 8 grand on yo-yos nobody will want and go out of business.
Ya, I seem to remember it was a ceramic coating. I haven’t heard of any issues with it though . My Ti-Vayder is raw so I can’t offer any comments on it.
I generally prefer Throw Yo string but sometimes you just need bulk poly and the best bulk poly is gone. We miss you RCS.
Jeremy has kindly provided me with the supplier and formula for Oh Canada and I’m bringing it back baby!
I did ask the manufacturer to make it a purple stripe instead of a red because I do not want to impersonate or counterfeit the original string even if it’s the same formula and supplier.
That Oh Canada string was really perfect for certain throws (the RBC for example). And a reference to I can’t believe it’s not butter is always welcome.
Note to any string makers reading: Fruit stripe gum seems like a fitting thematic paring with multi color string for us “old heads” (as the kinder kids sometimes refer to us).
Fun Fact, the OG Throw-Yo spun poly string, when I was still learning how to make string, was going to be called “Blackline”. Each string has a single black stripe running through each string. The original Monobath, Gentian Violet, and Neurotoxin colors where like this.
