In my experience the denser woods tend to have more uniform density. Woods like purple heart and harder. Also try to use wood without knots or other deformities. Otherwise it’s all in the symmetry. Bocote is my favorite to work with. It can even be polished without anything on it to a nice shine.
If you intend to turn wooden unresponsives you need to make them with a minimum tolerance of .01mm and make sure that the wood you have has perfect density. You also need to be able to mount the half you have made for second operation also at a tolerance of about .01mm.
You also need to prepare for something like one in four turn out OK.
I would also ask yourself why, other than doing it for personal growth, as they also just don’t perform very well unless they are huge.
In other words, it’s incredibly difficult thing to turn on a wood lathe. I wouldnt bother, but its up to you.
I will buy a vibe induced unresponsive wood FH1. Please let me know if you end up selling one.
I don’t have a FH1, so I don’t know how well I could recreate it, but I’m going to try the ol unresponsive challenge again today.
Your first unresponsive is very close to a FH1 shape. Anywhere near a 57mm diameter, 38 width.
Also if anyone is interested, Eric Wolf still has all of his pictures up. One day I’ll finally pull the trigger on a lathe and join you guys.
These have a real ‘grandpa made a yoyo’ look.
It lives! And this one is like 5x smoother.
Freshly cut purpleheart looks pretty meh, but ya’ll can imagine what it’ll be like in a week.
Man i would love to try out a wooden unresponsive throw one day !!! I just can’t believe that that’s actually a thing It looks fantastic @Eric_Newlin !!!
People are just in love with wooden unresponsives.
They play badly, people. Badly.
It’s like longing to try the early flight contraptions after the invention of modern aircraft. Probably a bad idea, and only for the crazy.
Hey I get it. I love to try things like this.
I don’t have much experience here but only one of the 3 tk sleep machines i have is kinda smooth, its the laminated wood version with holo stamp. The black and white painted ones are really vibey and even the costructon seems a litt lackluster where the adustable bearing seat axle setup compared to the laminatd one.
I still throw the wooden unresponsive you made all the time. It does not play badly. At all.
I am gluten for punishment.
Call me 50 Shades of Wooden Unresponsives
Well… I must be wrong @YoYoExpertGarrett and @kretzschmar!
You are 100% wrong. Now get back to making those bad yoyos for everyone!
Maybe I’ll try to make a really terrible yoyo in the next couple of weeks.
