Show some wooden yoyos you've made

The response on the button is one of the best I’ve experienced across all my wooden fixies.

Agreed. Works well, sounds better than a starburst and the aesthetic has really grown on me

Also wondered why the shape of the Spindle was put aside? Is it just that the Button works better / takes less time to turn, or did Kyle have a problem with string layers in the gap mid-trick?

That silky oak spindle looks really good.

The only model I make for Kyle is the KNack. That’s his signature yoyo.

I haven’t made a spindle in years. Where did you see a silky oak one?

In your BST from April last year. One piece silky oak KNack and Spindle, both look insane.

I haven’t used silky oak because the local sheoak has so much spring tension in the radials that it tends to split on me

Yeah, sheoak is nice looking stuff but it just loves to split.

Recently upgraded my hole saw. Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll finish a new budgeroo/huon laminate, around 57mm d and 55g if it goes to plan.

Not sure what to make with the ABW. Arrived the day before my package from Glen and all I’ve done is get it balanced enough to spin. Each puck is just over 50g!

You have African Blackwood? Wow! Hiw did you get your hands on that?

Some of the factories that make wooden bangle blanks will sell them with the puck cut from the middle. I got this from ebay on the slow boat to test whether it’s worth spending more on a bulk lot. So far the timber seems good quality for the price

If any of these look interesting to you let me know and I’ll put them aside. From top to bottom is master grade gidgee (possibly too small even for a Burly), blackbean, mulga and budgeroo. Rhythm bones LtoR mulga, blackbean and gidgee. Blackbean has become my favourite acacia, medium density and good acoustics.

Thanks, mate. They all look interesting, but until I hold and inspect them, I can’t tell how useful they’d be for yoyos.

All good, the mulga and budgeroo both have at least one knot in them

I made another one-piece yoyo today.

Love it!!! Are you going to call it the Tea Saucer? :joy:

Nice, I love wooden bowls. Every room in my house has at least one

Engraving on the curve looks neat too

Just waiting for the glue to cure.

This one is roughly 57x31mm 55g. Matador spikes are flush with the side. Somehow I made a mess of the glue on both cups

You caught and held my attention. Good job.

How does it play?

Just gave it it’s first spin, for the most part it works great.
At low speeds it has a bit of wobble, but at full speed it feels smooth. There’s a good chance I’ve stuffed up the axle. Yesterday after sanding to 60 grit I assembled it with a tester axle and tried every different grain orientation of the halves and it played great. I might have messed up the final sanding and polishing, but more likely the axle.

My goal for this one was to have these specific dimensions and it finished almost exactly the size and weight I was going for. I can now say for sure that 57mm d is as far as I want to stretch for lunar stalls. In a day or two I’ll have an opinion on the weight and spin time.

In a few days I’ll knock the axle out and replace it, maybe try shaving 1-2mm off the diameter.

How are you producing these? With a lathe?
