RIP Jimmy Carter

We all knew it was coming, but it is still so sad to see him gone.

What was your connection to him? What did you like about him?

Well, I was in the US Navy when he was the first president I was old enough to vote for, so there’s that. Also I believe he was the finest human to hold that office.

He’ll go down as one of the greatest. History will treat him well as it should.

And I didn’t know you were in the service Kevin. Thank you.

Man. 100! I hope we all can be fortunate enough to make it that long. What a life. We need more people like him.

He was a great man. He used to stay regularly in random people’s households for weeks at a time, just to understand them, empathise and connect with his citizens.

Its incredible to think of the president at the dinner table with a family with a screaming toddler refusing to eat their dinner and going through the whole experience with them.

Man, this one hurts, even though it was SUCH a life well lived.

He was one of my biggest heroes. I he think represents the best among us.

I have so much respect for people who can cling fiercely to his ideals, and still have the guts to get in the ring time and time again. Like, it was ideals lived through action in the real world, and not just intellectual/philosophical ideals not imparted to real world living.

When I quit my job working for Duncan in Feb 2017, I threw too-big snow tires on my Miata and took a big cross country road trip.

I made a huge detour all the way to rural Georgia to see Jimmy Carter in the tiny town of Plains, and got to see him talk.

The building had donation bowls for charity. If you looked on the bottom, you could see that they were hand-carved by him. He would show up to local places in town and offer free handyman services to fix broken things. Just a total servant to both his community and to the world at large. Most humble larger than life person that I’ve ever seen.

That is a wonderful story! You were able to do something that I imagine will not be happening in the future, I believe you experienced the end of an era in American history there my friend.
