when i try revolutions, the slack doesnt open nearly wide enough to put the yoyo through, and i just get a knot. advice?

Try to adjust your string tension, you want it as neutral as possible.
Also, I’m not sure what you mean by putting the yoyo through the slack. That’s not really what you do, the slack more follows the yoyo. Here, take a look at this, see if it helps:
