Return tops vs yo-yo

Ok look, I’m old and not as hip as some of you, and my idea of rolling a joint is my right ankle, but what in the world is the difference and/or how it came to mean the same thing?

The word Yo-yo got copyrighted by some hack company in Canada, so our Canadian buddies can no longer sell yoyos as “yoyos”. So someone came up with the term “Return Tops” to use in place of “yoyos”. Basically, yoyos sold in Canada are sold as Return Tops.

I can’t remember the name of the Canadian copyright (trademark?) owner but it’s not Duncan. @unklesteve knows.

Google reveals that “yo-yo” is a Papa’s Toy Co. Ltd. trademark name for a spinning toy in Canada, but in the U.S. it was determined by a court in 1965 that Duncan’s trademark was improperly issued.

(BTW, trademark and copyright are not the same thing.)
