Responsive Suggestions

Hello. I been playing with a YYF Whip and Shooting Star. I really liked the shape of the Whip and for some reason it almost seems like I can play better with the whip. Maybe cause I’m used to it? I was wondering if there was any yoyos similar to the whips shape and diameter (50-54mm) but with a little more weight. I mainly want to do string type tricks with it. I prefer plastic but metal is OK. I’m trying to spend around $40. I been looking around and the DV888 seems like it would be what I’m looking for but I have read how disliked it is also. I read a lot of great things about the freehand one. It’s a little bigger but I may get that if it’s really that great. Thanks for any help!

The Whip is full size and Shooting Star is a bit oversize. If you are looking for a shape closer to Whip then the Freehand One is good, however they have size A bearing instead of C so they might be more snaggy (harder to do multiple layers of string before the string gets caught and binds itself) than the Whip/Shooting Star.
The DV888 is decent, however it is both undersized and the rim have a flat section that makes it a bit harder to land tricks on. It is a good training yoyo because you are forced to land your tricks cleaner.

I’d suggest maybe giving the YoTricks Sage a try. It is basically a delrin OneStar, and I would consider it a worthy successor to the Whip.

The Sage is Delrin? I thought it was polycarbonate with all the colors it comes in.

Sorry, I didn’t realize they had updated it. What I’m referring to is what they now call the Sage Classic.

I have been throwing both the Yoyo Factory Arrow and the Yoyo Factory new Sage.

Both are very close to the same diameter.

The Arrow is lighter and has a more pronounced “V” shape. I like this yoyo for Landing on the string and progressing. For me it is a little uncomfortable on the catch.

The Sage is noticeably heavier, and I seem to get more spin time and a little better stability with it. Having the “Extra” spin time at my stage of development gives me more “time” to acomplish what I am tring to do. I find it more comfortable on the catch.

Which one to get? Cant help with that. Both are Polycarbonate and Upgradeable to unresponsive.

I find my self picking based on what I am working on. I dont think one is better than the other, just slightly different in feel and play style.

From a purchase stand point - The Sage is more expensive, but it comes with a better bearing for the unresponsive upgrade (included).

Good Luck, have fun.

Woah, I didn’t know the Sage Classic was delrin…I’m going to have to take another look at that.

I didn’t even think about bearing size making a difference. I’m gonna check out the sage. I watch all the yotricks videos so I have seen it perform. Also just was thinking about the confusion but that also is a size A bearing. I seen the recess first base is coming back soon. Anyone know how that plays responsive and what size responsive bearing it uses? Thanks for all the advice!

Anyone ever try the iYoYo Passion? Seems to check alot of the boxes I’m looking for.

I love the First Base, either responsive or unresponsive. There’s probably a lot of nostalgia factoring into that, seeing as it was my first yoyo, but I still think it’s a really good throw. The only reason I don’t jump in to recommend it at every opportunity is the availability. If there is another run coming, I would definitely suggest it.

It usually comes with a slim size C bearing installed for responsive play, and a wide size C bearing in the box for unresponsive play. I never had much issue with the responsiveness out of the box, it’s always been pretty snappy.

That all being said, the plastic Freehand One is also a really good plastic, a lot of fun, and (usually) more available.

It’s not delrin it’s the same thing as a onestar which is made of the same material as the yyf one

The One (and Onestar/Sage) are made out of injection molded celcon, which is just a different brand name version of POM, just like delrin is a branded material. For all intents and purposes it’s the same thing as delrin.

(chemistry majors please refrain from making a snarky comment about how they’re technically different)

Ok, this makes sense. Watching the “history” video of the Sage, he refers to it as made out of “p-o-m”.
The Lyn Fury is celcon, too, IIRC, which feels a little different than the delrin throws I have, but I still like it better than the polycarb feel (generally, the plastic Fulvia has a great feel to it, and I think that’s polycarb).

I didn’t realize that my bad. Thanks for the info!

Size A bearing tend to work better for responsive (lubed), and they may not even become totally unresponsive even if you clean it, because the gap can only be so wide. They also make the yoyo feel a little heavier and snaggier compared to C bearing in the same design.

Size C- (half spec) is also good for responsive, however they also cause the yoyo to feel like they have less rim weight / momentum when you throw it. This is simply from the fact there isn’t enough room for the string to wound, effectively increasing the diameter of the string wound, similar to what happen with gears.

I just realized you are asking about responsive yoyos instead of unresponsive, in which case the Freehand One is perfect for that.

the magicyoyo locus is amazing. it’s really durable, comes back hard, and sleeps forever

Man I’m so indecisive. I think I’m in a toss up between the freehand one and passion. The sage looks fun too. I wish there were reviews on YouTube of the passion or if I could d try out these yoyos first. I’m gonna have to check out SW Randall here in Pittsburgh sometime. I will probably end up buying more than one of these options once I can afford to.

I’ve really been enjoying responsive. I just started being able to pull off matrix fairly consistently. I got the shooting star anticipating to eventually switch to unresponsive but so far I been having more fun with responsive.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. I’ve found the yoyo community to be very helpful since I started back up again.

It’s a fun one at a very, very reasonably price, especially if you can find it on BST! Rounded rims make it comfy upon return. The catch zone is wide. The only thing I don’t like is that the bearing seat kind of protrudes, so if the string hits it, you can lose stability. But overall, it’s a great little throw.

If you want a side-by-side of the Passion and the FH One AL (I don’t have the plastic one), I can take a picture and post for comparison.

Thanks for the response! Appreciate you offering to take photos. I ended up getting both and I am glad I did. I have been switching back and forth between the two since they came Friday. I really like both a lot. The Passion plays so well responsive, haven’t tried unresponsive yet. It feels like the perfect yoyo for me. I was looking for something similar in size to the yyf whip and it’s very similar but plays alot better. I’m surprised it isn’t more popular. You don’t see many people talking about it from the research I did on it. Thanks again.
