Prog Rock

Who here likes prog? I really like Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, and Transatlantic.

Eh, I like hard rock more. Progressive rock is more… easy listening music?

Love proggressive music, from the thrashing of Dream Theater to the sparkling harmonics of Yes. Prog and instrumental are hands down my favorite music genres. Kansas, Rush, Pink Floyd, Genesis (before they went pop), Dream Theater, Yes, Liquid Tension Experiment, all amazing bands.

All legit groups. Also, that is one INSANE guitar in your avvy.

I find almost 100% of prog (excluding rush) to be pretentious garbage. That’s just me. IMHO music shouldn’t just be about showing off , and that’s the feeling I get when I see or hear most progressive rock.

I saw Dream Theater open for Iron Maiden, and it was just solo after solo… crap

I am a musician, and from gathering what you have said in other threads, you are as well. From my point of view, I enjoy listening to prog because of the same reason you hate it, well, not exactly, but I enjoy it because they did not care what others thought about it. They simply made the music the way they wanted to.

Rush is amazing…

I don’t like listening to showing off. I do however like guitar, drum, organ, bass solos, you name it.

This thread looks familiar…

Yes is my favorite band ever ever ever. And I love just about everything prog, new and old. Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, The Moody Blues, Gong, Frank Zappa, Soft Machine, ELP, Pink Floyd, Rush, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, Tool, The Mars Volta, Coheed and Cambria…

I’m gonna stop listing there because if I keep going I might list something that someone might not consider “progressive” and then there would be a debate over semantics. That’s what happened on the other forum. I don’t want to have that debate because it’s boring and kinda pointless.

What would be cool is to see someone recommend prog bands that I didn’t list above. I want more!

Malarky. Just because they actually have some complexity to their songs hardly means they are showing off. Most of this pop music these days is terrible because all it is a singer, with maybe one instrument in the backround, singing the same dang thing over and over. Solos, btw, have nothing to do with showing off, personally, I prefer instrumental music over everything else because lyrics just seem to be an excuse for people to repeat the same thing over and over. Sure, a certain amount of stage presence is involved, but all bands need that.

@Chainsawctopus
You might try Symphony X, haven’t listened to a whole lot of their songs, but they seem pretty good.

I have heard some Symphony X. They’re alright. I don’t like them as much as other things, but you know, it’s alright.

Yah, just trying to brainstorm some possibilities.

Spock’s Beard? Neal Morse (If you are a Christian like me, then you will love this guy.)

HOW COULD I FORGET GLASS HAMMER!?!?!

Just picked up a couple of these.

The Mars Volta, Yes and Rush are my favs!

I actually discovered Glass Hammer earlier today, can’t believe I had never heard of them. I am now a huge fan. ;D

Glass Hammer is pretty good, thanks for the recommendation Puffpwn!

I have a Mars Volta yoyo, too! It’s a very cool piece of band merchandise.
