the problem with that one hand bind is that it doesnt always work well on very unresponsive yoyos
Make sure your thumb is angled perpendicular to the angle of the gap.
ive got them pretty good now, i can do them about 1 out of 3 tries now. i have my DM set fairly unresponsive and doesnt usually bind it unless i braintwister and throw it
You really want to make sure your string tension is just right because it can really make a difference in whips. Keep practicing that big whip motion. It will come eventually!
