ok so gentry said in a interview that the replay pro is good but not as good as the shutter this is just my idea but wouldn’t that mean a plastic shutter is better than a replay pro
note: i do not know anything about yoyo making so don’t get super mad at me if I’m wrong
He said that the plastic yoyo was not quite as good as the metal. In my mind, a replay pro would be better than a direct copy of the shutter made out of plastic. It would all come down to the preference of the player, like always.
A plastic Shutter is going to play totally different than the metal Shutter. If you could make a plastic Shutter which matched the aluminum shutter in all aspects of play, it would instantly be the one of the one or two best plastics out there. The only other plastic which plays as well or better than many metals since the ProtoStar did it against the metals of its time in 2009 is the Flare released by Zeekio last year. The new gold standard in my book for plastic yoyos. And while I don’t usually like the word “better,” the Flare is better than the Replay Pro in my opinion.
Thai sounds really cool, though it might have to have metal rings…
Yes, the weight and weight distribution would be different enough to make it play different. The YYJ Hitman and Lyn Fury are a good example. The Lyn Fury was an all plastic copy of the Hitman and the two played entirely different. The Lyn Fury was a Hitman w/o the aluminum ring and that made all the difference in the world. At one time someone was making an aluminum version of the Hitman. It too played different than both the original Hitman and the Lyn Fury.
A plastic Shutter would be an unstable mess. There’s a reason why the Replay Pro is oversized with very chunky rims and weighs in at 69g. It takes total rethinking of design in making a plastic.
Plastics have less density than aluminum, yet less strength overall.
If you want to make one that feels similar to a Shutter, you’ll need to oversize it, and move the weight as far to the rim as possible, while keeping in mind that the more weight you put on the rim, the less plastic you have to reinforce other parts. Unless you are willing to sacrifice strength (yoyo breaks in one hit) then it’s pretty much impossible to have aluminum like weight distribution.
In this case if you want it to feel similar yet still have enough strength, you can’t preserve the Shutter shape (not even the catch zone) which ends up changing the feel anyway.
With weight rings however, this could be possible.
Plastics are generally viewed as inferior to metals performance wise because:
-Tendency to be less rim weighted that can’t be helped unless you’re willing to oversize or add weight rings.
-More frictions on the string cutting the spin time down quite a lot on complex tricks.
-Less precision.
-Generally don’t grind as good as metals, especially annoying when it accidentally hit your hand and stops.
In the other hand, Golyat by Rebellion (designed by YYR Kengo) is I think the absolute best performing plastic yoyo for comps. Smoothness, grindability, weight distribution, stability, all comparable to metals.
