Hi all, I’m pretty new to Yoyoing and I’m considering buying a second yoyo. My first is a Shooting Star, I’ve really been enjoying it but want to try something that’s a little heavier and more powerful. I am considering the Speedholic XX or the Stelvia X-SP, I’ll be using it for unresponsive play. Can those of you with more experience explain to me the difference between these two yoyos?
you only looking at plastic yo-yos at the moment? I would really look into a monumental if you feel like you’re ready to get more into throwing !
if only looking at plastics, speedaholic is a very capable throw
I haven’t thrown a Stelvia but knowing luftverks other plastics, it’s probably more on the chill/casual side of yo-yos
i’ve thrown a speedaholic xx and it’s more performative in my experience,
also has a finger spin hub if you’re into that
if you’re interested in metal, this always gets recommended but the Forma Edition is an excellent throw with a lower price if you find one on the BST forums
I’ve thrown both the speedaholic and the Stevlia and both are very high quality capable throws.
If you’re looking for something with more power and weight to it the speedaholic has plenty (fingerspin cup is a bonus). It has a large diameter and a strong H figure and feels a little large in the hands.
The Stevlia plays a little more light on the string (still heavy for a plastic) but definitely has more stability and at least in my setup has a longer spin time. Even though the Stevlia has an almost identical diameter I find that it is more comfortable in my hand with a V figure (This is personal preference!).
The stelvia is slightly wider and has more of a solid monometal feel on the end of the string but overall the speedaholic feels denser. The polycarbonate has a smoother finish on the speedaholic as well.
If you have any other specific questions just let me know and I can test or check for you
Honestly I was only looking at plastic yoyos because I still smack my yoyo on the ground pretty often and I have the feeling I’d ding up a metal one pretty badly. That said, I’m definitely open to trying a monometal! I’ll check out the Forma that you mentioned.
I’m curious what a solid monometal feel means, I’ve only thrown the Shooting Star so I don’t have much to go off of. I like the idea of having a metal feel from a plastic yoyo, but perhaps I should just be looking at metal yoyos instead!
Do you have a yoyo meet near you? If so, try to find the time to go to one! Yoyoers are very welcoming and will let you try their yoyos. Also if you intend on dinging your yoyo, it may be good to get a harder alloy of aluminum. 7075 and 7068 are harder than 6061 aluminum. you should be able to get 7075 and 7068 monometal throws for like 40-60
I was gonna say that the Shooting Star and Speedaholic XX feel pretty similar. Both are very capable and excellent throws (I own both). Have you thrown in your unresponsive bearing into your Shooting Star yet?
I’d look into a cheap monometal to see if that’s something you’ll enjoy…play it over grass or carpet if you’re worried about dinging it up. Plenty of options out there from many brands - all depends on if you want to try a different or similar shape out. If you’re new, can’t really say to “find a shape you like” esp if you haven’t tried many throws yet. The iYoyo Hidra is a pretty good and forgiving yoyo, wide, stable, rim weight. H-shapes are going to give you the most stability and at least in my experience, are the most forgiving when trying out something new.
So it goes. I also think you should heavily consider trying a monometal yoyo. You can roll out a yoga mat or grab a rug at a thrift store or like lay down a blanket even to protect your floors/ the yoyo.
Shooting star is a good plastic and youre not goingto notice much of a performance increase with those other plastic yoyos.
I recommend duncan barracuda. It is like the same price as those other yoyos. It’s gonna get dinged but that is fine and part of the learning process.
I agree with everyone else. Get a monometal or a bi-metal if you can afford it. Plastics, as good as some of them are, can’t reach the level of performance of a metal yoyo. Also, the Speedaholic XX and Shooting Star are practically the same.
Look around the store and find a cool looking metal yoyo within your budget and pull the trigger. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
Personally, I highly recommend getting a One Drop. They make the best yoyos and I will fight anyone who disagrees with me
Never played the Speedaholic but I have a Stelvia. I like the Stelvia and bring it out with me sometimes but I play it way less frequently than my Ultracut. They are both around the same price and the Ultracut has WAY more performance
There is also the plastic Fulvia. Though more narrow, it’s more comfortable to hold and catch and due to its weight spins way longer than the Shooting Star. I currently have both and I prefer the pFulvia.
Another option is to buy something you like off of BST. It will save you money and you will probably get a better bang for your buck. Use PayPal, for goods and services and you will be protected.
Yes!! If you aren’t super picky about aesthetic damage and check in at the right time then you can easily get a high-end yoyo for less than 50% retail price. I got an M2 for 25 USD, and it’s now my favourite yoyo.
