PIF - Sickburn Ultem Yo-Yo

Update on the main thread. Will probably be a month or more though before a production order of v2 is in hand though so let’s keep the v1 PIF going for now.

But since there is gonna be a v2 if someone has the v1 PIF on hand and really had their heart set on running it over with your car… just be sure to film it? :joy:

@rkalajian when you try out strings just keep in mind the gap will be narrower and larger response holes in v2 so string selection might change. If I need to just ship you a v2 to test once I have them we can do that in a month or two once I have them.

Try strings first before you run it over with your car :joy:

Had some stuff come up, I gotta move this along. @AudreySickburn please confirm who is after me in this list? I see either @Yodaddyo or @TheThrowingGnome

can I still get in on this?

@Yodaddyo is next, thanks for checking!

Yep! At some point this will be replaced with the v2 model with improved response but we are keeping this one going until I get those in hand.

The ultem ate ‘em has landed

First impressions are that there is a LOT of potential here. I can make it do tricks, but a tighter gap is definitely warranted, which we already knew.

How much did you shrink the gap on v2?

Also, I have some cooler trick clips, now. I just need to edit them down. I’ll just say, the ultem ate ‘em is a very capable, albeit difficult yoyo. I imagine the gap shrinkage will make it a top performer.

The one you have is 2.8 mm gap and the final gap is 2.3 mm, the response holes have also been increased from the 2mm little guys on yours to 4 mm holes.

I really gotta commit the metric system to memory. I never know what any of this ACTUALLY means :joy:

I think the holes are honestly perfect on this one. Just shrinking the gap (maybe even slightly more than v2) should be sufficient, in my guess. I find that I get more snags with bigger response holes. You are the mastermind though. And like I said, I’m purely guessing.

I can’t wait to try v2. This thing is definitely fun. I want more shapes! :joy: all the ultem yoyos!

I’m gonna go post some more tricks with it on the 0a thread now. :victory_hand:

Gonna hope it’s not snaggy because I’ve got a hundred of them getting machined at the moment haha but I did a printed test run of the gap and holes and liked how it felt. :crossed_fingers: Ultem machines really smooth and they are getting bead blasted so there shouldn’t be any sharp edges around the holes.

for contextual measurements 4 mm holes would be half as wide as an mr85 bearing if that helps. And the new gap is an about one playing cards width less than an mr85 bearing gap.

As far as more shapes and stuff go, if I sell enough to make my money back then more is on the table, maybe a bearing throw.

Contextualizing definitely helped :joy: that honestly sounds perfect! I had my millimeters all jacked up  I was definitely picturing way bigger holes and a way wider gap.

Oh good. I was getting nervous slightly over here lol when I read your comment  but in the past going more narrow than 2.3 mm usually ended up in looper territory.

Outside of more Ultem, I’m exploring some alternative yoyo materials that are common for things like knife handles but aren’t generally seen in the yoyo world. Like canvas or linen micarta and g10. Micarta would be like having a yoyo made entirely of rigid Tom Kuhn Turbo Discs :joy:

Honestly I’ll go in on a proto run for a turbo disk yoyo lol

Hahaha! Sorry!!! Yeah, never listen to me. I almost always say, “those adjustments are not gonna work ”, and I’m almost always WRONG! :joy:

Knife handle yoyos are the thing I didn’t know I needed, but I’m loving watching you figure it out!

This is cool! I myself have always wondered what a G10 or micarta yo-yo would be like. Both are extremely durable materials. By the way, they can be polished. My long bow has micarta reinforced nock tips and they are smooth and shiny.

Nice! I was considering if there would be a way to polish the axle but leave the rest more textured. The axle may end up smooth enough due to the way the fabric in it lays though, especially if I have the machine shop do a finer Ra which is how they measure roughness. I’m having a place cut micarta axles for me to stick in 3d prints so I can see if it’s viable or will eat strings for breakfast.

Dunno if folks on the PIF saw the damage but for science I suggest one be run over by a car, it did not survive the van haha. So one unit will continue down the comment train still but the unit that broke in half is gonna skip the train and go to the first person to comment wanting to tinker with it. Want to drill it out and stem it? Epoxy it? Drill some cabal guts in it? If anyone wants to mad scientist it they have priority on the two halves. If nobody wants to Frankenstein some Ultem then I will collect the bits.
