"Old Folks" who Can Sort of Throw BATTLE 2014 - Discussion and Rules

Glad to help!

Semi-official submissions are starting to come in! Only a week and a few hours to go! Lots of time to get a 1-minute video done (remember, it doesn’t have to be a killer edit). But don’t pull a GregP and wait until the last minute. Even GregP didn’t pull a GregP this time around.

I think ranking the top 3 in each category would be the most you’d get people to do with a reasonable turnout. I think a 3rd party service would be nice, but I’d be concerned about voting from non yye people. It would be much easier to get 100 people to login to some random service and rate your video higher, than to get them to sign up for a YYE account and send you a GregP a private message. I think if you find a 3rd party service, you should require the voter to enter their YYE account name to confirm they have one.

Now for a question. I know we are supposed to self qualify ourselves as old, do we also self qualify ourselves for a category as well? I started in May of last year, so I figure I would still be in the Category 1.

Ben

Sounds good to me.

Ben (aka thehandcoder) is not only a self-professed “Old Folk” for the contest, but has upped the prize pot with a pair of yoyo holsters.

It would be nice for 3rd-place to have a “permanent” piece of yoyo gear for their efforts, so they will be allocated to the 3rd-place winners!

I’m not just self professed, I’m just old.

Haha! See? You’re owning it!

Can I still enter??? 32 with 4 rug rats… I feel like a old dude, gray hairs and all! Hehe

If so, can we mix wooden fixed with unresponsive?

I want to say “yes”, but it makes the judging too shaky. I know yooldman would love to have some fixie in his, too. Maybe the two of you should have a showdown. Haha!

But no, I’m going to limit it to straight-up 1A (unresponsive) to keep the voters heads clear.

Don’t try to pawn that fixie showdown off on me. You’ve whipped me 2 years running in FAF.

Haha, but not based on skill! You are OWNING me with the fixie stuff!

Greg I sent a PM a day or so ago, just hoping you got it  Can we let our videos go “live” on YouTube before the deadline? Thanks again for everything!

Just so everyone knows. Greg is camping for the weekend (this is a holiday weekend in Canada) so he will not ba able to respond to people as quick as he normally does.

Last year I believe they were supposed to stay unlisted until the contest. If you set it to unlisted instead of private. It should work for Greg to embed.

Back a day early from camping! I see some submissions in my inbox; haven’t gotten around to responding to individual questions yet, but fear not… nobody shall be left behind.

2 more full days for submissions!

“Unlisted” at YouTube is the best option-- the link will still work but it won’t be indexed or available to subscribers. Not sure if there’s an “unlisted” analogy at Vimeo.

Cheers,
Greg

My apologies for being so quiet… I’ve been keeping an eye on this thread and was hoping to enter again - but my June has been a bit of a whirlwind and a gap to film something has not yet appeared

I look forward to watching the entries… Good luck everyone!

Down to less than 2 days. Come on guys you still have time to make a quick video. Lets put together some videos that show those young whipper snappers us old folks are still cool.

Yupyup! Still time to huck together a 1-minute (more or less!) video. Remember, the judging is not meant to be affected by whether you do some scenery changes (like I did in mine) or just film with one camera angle and backdrop (as a few other entries do!).

There’s the raffle for the Gambit as well-- even if you suspect that you’re not the strongest in your category, it doesn’t matter… enter just to show us what you’ve got, to get the free strings, and to take a shot at the Gambit!

In terms of voting, I’m going to see about one of the 3rd party services and take an earlier suggestion-- you provide your YYE username for cross-reference, then you will rank your top-3. If I can’t find a suitable 3rd-party, I will collect the votes myself. That sound OK to everybody?

I won’t be voting for obvious reasons but I’m eagerly awaiting to watch all the videos!

I entered last year with just a month or 2 of throwing experience. my video was horrible. I couldn’t get more than 40 seconds of video. It was still a lot of fun and it was great to have all the encouragement. Come on guys you can do it!

I think the voting sounds good. I definitely think ranking top 3 will make the results a bit more dynamic.
