They may have both been kidding.
When do I kid?
Ok, I think I have read everything and I qualify but did I miss a entry deadline? Where is the entry sent into?
Thanks
Deadline is the 30th at midnight! Then I’ll compile a list, confirm it here, and set up the votes. Voting will end… I dunno… like 3 days after it starts? That should be enough time I would think. Up for discussion in this, the discussion thread!
The ways to submit the video are really 2, broadly speaking:
For #2 it would be handy if the panicked email was at least a day or two in advance of the deadline.
Since all participants are eligible for a free pack of Unknown strings, if you wish to claim your strings I will need your mailing address. They will be mailed directly from Unknown strings, so he (modman10) will obviously take receipt of a list of addresses. We did it this way last year and I (as well as last year’s participants) can vouch for his trustworthiness in that regard.
Hope that helps!
Greg
Uh, oops! I forgot that this will be a long weekend in Canada and that I’ll actually be out of town for it. It’ll be pretty silly to enforce a deadline I won’t be around for, so the new deadline is July 2nd at midnight.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Woohoo! I can procrastinate for 3 more days!!
Your are right! - HAPPY CANADA DAY –
I did some filming today. As long as I play it back and it’s not absolutely awful, I will only need one more 5-second standalone trick to add to it and I’ll be done! This is a record for me. I’m usually last-minute-guy!
Do you have the sponsor graphic ready?
Let me fire it up tonight… stay tuned!
Thanks Greg. I’ve got my fallback video done. Now that I have something to submit, I’ll try to get some better video.
Awesome, thehandcoder!
I got my one and only video done. Ready to go!! It clocked in at 1:07 including the title card. I think that’s good enough for rock and roll.
A few topics of conversation for those following along. Both relate to the fact that there will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd for both divisions. Please feel free to chime in!
Does this make sense to everyone?
(note: I acknowledge that the Gambit would have also been a great fit, for a division prize, but I really wanted the opportunity to give away this incredible yoyo to ANYONE who entered, so that everyone could feel they had a shot at a top prize.)
I would LIKE to do it as a ranking. In a perfect world, we would rank all entrants. I would pick my “1st, 2nd, 3rd…” all the way down to “12th, 13th…” or however many entries there turn out to be. The problem with this is that the more entries there are (and honestly, I have no idea yet how many there will be since there is no official sign-up) the more of a chore this becomes for each voter, until some may decide “Ugh, no time for this…” The voters are every bit as important as the contestants and we need them!
Similar to above, you could just turn in your ranking for top-3 or top-5. That should produce enough statistical significance to get the top-3 from each division.
The second issue is the voting mechanism: In terms of anonymity, some people don’t want their votes to be seen. Maybe I’m best friends with JoeYoThrow but I didn’t have him in my top-3 (because of course I’m an honest voter, not just a popularity contest supporter!). I still don’t necessarily want to accidentally hurt JoeYoThrow’s feelings, though… which might make me hesitant to post my ranking publicly to a voting thread.
To solve this, people could submit their votes to either me or an impartial 3rd-party (perhaps a representative from one of the sponsors?) to tally.
Another possible solution is that I find a 3rd-party survey website of some sort that allows ranked polls (I’m sure they exist) and we track them that way. There’s the risk that the system could be abused by multiple votes from different locations (home computer, work computer) but we could decide collectively that we’re an awesome bunch (which we are) and trust each other.
Thoughts?
I love the voting idea outlined above. I’m pretty convinced Greg, that assuming you have the time, no one would have a problem submitting their votes to you. Given the effort you’ve put in to setting this event up, I just can’t believe people would then believe you were going to rig the voting! I appreciate though that this means more work for you so if there is an easy external site that would be fine too. Another option (although more complicated) that would keep this on site would be to set up three polls. One poll for first placed votes, one for second and one for third. Just a thought. Finally, my vid was 1.07 and I totally thought you were going to reject it for being too long. Therefore you have made me doubly happy
Thanks, Joe! I certainly don’t mind tallying the votes if people want to send them in. So your opinion is the ‘top-3’ rather than ‘rank every single competitor’ if I’m extrapolating correctly.
In terms of time, you’re fine. I just don’t want people creeping TOO far out… we should all be somewhere around a minute-ish. If your video is more like a minute-and-a-half-ish, you’ve probably abused the system. Haha!
Okay I’m a little bit confused on the prize distribution. Can you list first second and third place based on most entries and least entries. It sounds like first and second place of most entered get the Valor and glide. Then first place of the least entered gets just the gift certificate.
I feared it was confusing! So instead of “Division One” and “Division Two” let’s call them “Popular Division” and “Less Popular Division”:
Popular Division:
1st - Choice of Glide or Valor, plus Gift Certificate
2nd - Glide or Valor (whichever 1st did not choose) plus Gift Certificate
3rd - Bonus strings, Gift certificate
Less Popular Division:
1st - Valor
2nd - N12 and Tropical Spins package (plus, let’s have a little chat… I might have something for you)
3rd - Bonus strings, Gift certificate
That help?
Much clearer. Thanks.
Perfect. I was confused in exactly the same way as thehandcoder. =)
