Oh totally. I didn’t mean to pretend he can’t have an opinion because he’s new. When I first started playing I had certain opinions and they evolved over time. That much is true.
And while, from an objective point of view, some yoyos DO perform better than others. For most it’s more a matter of taste.
People are too focused on brands. They tried a crappy Magicyoyo and assume the rest is crap or tried a good yoyofactory and assume the brand is just better.
Newer yoyo’s are usually better than older ones
Magicyoyos y04, V11, V12 and V13 are just extremely good. Better than the shutter wide angle. On par with the spotlight Ultra but I get if you prefer the V13 over the spotlight. Magicyoyo is just hit and miss. Usually their newer models are really good but they keep selling old outdated stuff for some reason.
Magicyoyo is about twice as cheap as the other brands. Meaning you shouldn’t be surprised if a 25 USD Magicyoyo y04 is just as good as a 75 USD W1ld wilderness 7075 for example. And it makes perfect sense for a 30 USD Magicyoyo V13 from 2025 to be better than an overpriced over advertised 60 USD shutter wide angle from 2019.
Beginners often let their yoyo judgement be influenced by a dirty bearing. Especially yoyofactory bearings often need cleaning right after purchase. So it’s possible they don’t spin very long or are slightly responsive out of the box. So your yoyofactory yoyo’s might be better than you think, swap some bearings around see if that changes anything about your opinion.
oh sry i was just making a general statement. i didn’t mean that as a counter to anything you had said, just a cliff notes summation…wait is cliff notes still a thing??
Magic Drop drives me nuts! It’s such a slick move, though. And I do have some yoyos that feel much easier to land Magic Drop with than others. I assumed some yoyos were just better for certain tricks like that. I guess I should just grind it out on those ones that are harder to, like you said. Then hopefully it will eventually be good everywhere.
Organic yoyos are better for magic drop because there is more contact with the string. The rotation of the Yoyo helps the rejection. There are two things that will help with Magic Drop. First keep the throw hand stationary. The tendency is to rotate the finger inward which messes up the trick. Secondly keep the yoyo close to the hand when it rejects. It the Yoyo wraps around the finger and the distance is too far from the finger, rejection won’t happen.
I also want to add to the discussion that not everyone is after a more stable/long spinning Yoyo. I much prefer a One Drop Diorama over many other competitive throws.
To be fair, magic drop is easier on organics. But any yoyo can do it. You can still do that trick consistently on a shutter wide angle. I have both a diorama and a wangle, and I’m able to do the repeater 5-6 times in a row without a miss on both. The wangle is much more stabe than the dio though.
Me too. That’s what’s in my pocket today. But, every yoyo can do every trick. (Except for fixed axle, but someone please prove me wrong, would love to see horizonal 0a.) Some yoyos are easier, especially for horizontal and rejections, but they aren’t requirements.
Edit: I realize my response sounds argumentative, but while I am saying this, I’m not advocating people to learn horizontal with a organic and magic drop on a h shaped low walled monster. I would argue the opposite. My point is more that learning tricks is a skill issue and practice issue. I learn many rejection trick on an organic, but over time I wanted to challenge myself to us an “less idea” yoyo.
The topic was originally more about quality yoyo for dollar, and I somewhat started to change the subject. To the OP @wsobchak , I’ve been here too with the unmet expectations on a new yoyo. Some yoyos are awesome quality and are super fun, and others don’t meet expectations, and they don’t get played with as often. It’s a bummer and the best thing you could do to have a “try before you buy” is find a club to go to, or a contest. You’ll meet generous people who will be open to you trying their stuff, and you can try new yoyos from booths as well (contests). I went to a contest near me the first time last year, and I didn’t think I would go home with the 3 yoyos that I did, and that was because I was able to try them in person. Funny enough, I only have 1 of them now, as my tastes have changed.
