New Hobbies or Pets Since COVID-19?

I really need to practice folding a dollar bill into a swan so I can leave it with tips.

sounds like a good plan

Decided to bump this topic to share my new pet, ā€œSlinkā€ (or Slinky)

Slink is a young ball python, just got her today - a very active and curious little ā€œboop ropeā€ as my friends and I like to call snakes. She’s pretty chill too, though right now I’m minimizing the handling so she can get used to her new space. Will be some fun times ahead with her, been a long time since I had a snake.

During the early days of lockdown here in the UK I got it into my head that I would give Kendama a try so picked up a cheap entry model Sweets one and all I can say is that it just doesn’t really do anything for me. Maybe in time I will ā€˜get it’ but its just a stick and ball right?

I have however got really into Begleri, Knuckle Rollers and contact coins. Aroundsquare are an amazing company and these skill toys appeal to me right now much more than yoyo. I still play yoyo each day but for only about 5-10 mins max (compared to 2-3 hours daily for months before hand). Begleri is not easy to learn but is very rewarding and the community feels very fresh. I have no doubt my enthusiasm for yoyo will return at some point but right now I am enjoying the newness of something else, something else that isn’t all about collecting

Enjoy your new snake. I’ve never had a pet snake, but, people I’ve known who have all tend to love them. I’m always happy to learn more about animals people enjoy keeping as pets. I appreciate any knowledge you would like to share.

I’m learning a few things too as I go along as I haven’t had a pet snake since pre-internet days, when I was young. One of my best friends is a snake owner of 18 years - has had his corn snake for about that long so far and has owned a ball python. Glad to know I have a direct resource of info should I run into any questions.

Speaking of Snakes, we saw this at a nearby nature preserve yesterday:

A Brown Water Snake

I’ve owned several snakes over the years, and really enjoyed them. However, the poop became the one deal breaker for me.

Sold my pickup truck. Used some of the money to buy a pair of drones. DJI Mavic Mini and Air 2. To be honest, so far I worry so much about crashing or loosing one that I don’t enjoy flying them.

Always loved the Piebald variation! I remember holding Bob’s albino boa and Peter’s (iirc) piebald when they were worth more than my car! $10,000+ each. Now they are much more reasonable and still really neat. The piebalds are the best as the albino boa looses it’s colors as an adult.

The Boa turns mostly all white and yellow as adults. This is a lower color juvy -

I’m still doing the Water Kefir all this time later.

I’ve graduated to a gallon jar.

I’m not sure if it’s more of a hobby or a pet.

The one in the dark bottle is my favorite: Green Tea and Mint Soda. Regular with mint is really delicious too. I grow the mint in the back yard. Ginger, Ginger ā€œBeerā€, Vanilla, Cream Soda, even plain are all good.

I made it with coconut water… once.

I’m the only one who still drinks it, except my 14yo will occasionally.

I think I’ll commit to sticking with it until this mess is over. It seems like it’s a pretty ingrained habit though, so I may never stop?

I’ve gotten more into trivia. Started playing Learned League and finished my Jeopardy! audition.

Awesome! I love trivia! At work I run Chris’ Super Trivia every Monday. Well, I did, but we have not run activities for guests since March due to gatherings.

I love Kefir! Drink it daily. Never tried water… or making it solo. Very cool.

I get my kefir directly from a Amish farm. Awesome!

How do you make your water Kefir?

It’s really easy. Just put water, sugar, molasses, and some raisins in a jar, stir until the sugar is dissolved, add the grains (has to be water kefir, milk ones won’t work), add a pinch or two of baking soda, cover with cheese cloth, and wait 2 days with it out of direct sunlight. Stir it every 12 hours or so, but not critical.

To do the soda you add some sugar (I use honey) to a flip top container, fill it with water kefir (the liquid you made), let it ferment for another few days. The bacteria and yeast eat the sugar (some anyway) and turn it into carbon dioxide; which makes it fizzy! Ginger or mint are great in it, but for mint I usually do the green tea (or black tea) mint soda.

For the green tea soda I brew a cup of tea, sweeten it a lot, add it to a 1/2 liter bottle, add a sprig of fresh mint, fill the rest with water kefir, and ferment. It’s AMAZING!!!

I’d happily send you some grains, if you wanted to try it.

As long as y’all haven’t gotten into making Pruno…

Haha, I had to look that up.

I watched a video where two dudes made Pruno and it was hilarious, one dude was absolute terrified to drink it (they didn’t end up drinking it).

Animal Crossing New Horizons became my life there for a few months.

Just today I got Civilization 6 for my switch.

So now I have another few months of zero productivity to look forward to!

DJI has a free drone simulator that’s leaps and bounds better than most free/cheap simulators out there. It’s got most of the DJI drones and graphics are super high quality. It is a totally different style of drone though and you can’t preform flips and such. Still fun to play with and very handy if you’re considering buying a video style drone. Probably wouldn’t be much help for learning a FPV racing drone, but figured I’d throw it out there. I know it’s a late response to a comment post, but COVID is still here. I’ve been getting over it for a couple months now myself and when ya can’t leave the hospital or house it’s a fun free thing to play with.
