That happened to me too. I assumed it was just my browser.
Internet Explorer will display a black screen where the chat normally is if it doesn’t have the right plugins. If you are a user of Internet Explorer I can offer you no sympathy for receiving a low quality browsing experience. After all, you are using a low quality browser. Switch to a decent browser, install the necessary plugins, and then post if you are still having issues.
Or just download FF, Chrome or Opera. That should do the trick.
