More practice and more pain.

I don’t know if I’ve gotten these but typically that sounds like if you have like a ‘tail’ that you have too much string on the nth side of the bind - try making that ‘loop’ smaller and typically that helps my binds be nice and tight - in a way just thinking ‘the bare minimum’ in terms of how much slack is needed inside to bind.

I also do consistently (second nature at this point) check by throwing front style and binding for sure cleanly before doing a hard sideways throw for a series of tricks if I think the last bind I did was in anyway suspicious. Or just in general sometimes for string tension

Know Pain Know Gain as they say

This may sound harsh to some, but is 100% true. It also changes from yoyo to yoyo and, depending on gap thickness and other factors, you may have to adjust how much string to allow into the gap to activate a bind.

Eventually, with lots of practice (and pain), you’ll start to develop a feel for it. It’ll still happen, but you’ll at least be more aware of snags before throwing a wild breakaway into your own head.

How about a video?

A video is worth 10,000 words.

We need more details.

….What you are saying is about as useful as if you said, ‘Every time I jump out my bedroom window, it hurts when I land. What should I do’

…Well, first off, how many floors up from the ground is your bedroom window?

A video would show us ‘what’ you are doing and provide a lot more depth about how to rectify the situation.

Hmmm. This is interesting…so I sometimes have tangled or unclean binds and never get this type of pain your mentioning,

Is your arm a cannon? Must be throwing super hard and binding immediately to experience this sort of pain.

My first thought was to suggest slower throws. I also think we need a more detailed description of what is happening to you. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bind create a knot and come back early due to that knot. I’ve had a bind come back faster than I expected because the yoyo was spinning faster than I thought it was. And I’ve had an extra wrap lock around the string halfway through a bind that caused the yoyo to come back earlier than expected when I threw it next time. That kind of knot seems (to me) the most likely way a yoyo will hurt. If you’re throwing a breakaway, your face is unfortunately placed roughly halfway between your hands, and I’ve had my glasses bumped by a yoyo that came back early during a breakaway. If the yo-yo had been just a little closer, i would have gotten a black eye. I’ve also had a yoyo unintentionally bind in the middle of a trick and slam into my fingers/knuckles. That is probably the most often way I get hurt by a yoyo.

Why don’t ye check thy string Tention

Ah you beat me to it. Check string tension for sure.

I just came to add this to my previous response. Tension/Torsion is definitely the main cause of string snags and super knots.

Always important to do a safety throw if the bind feels a little loose with too much tail
