Need help with Spirit Bomb 1st hop

Watched your video again, and yup, you would eventually find your way with a longer string. It’s still possible with that string length, but you need to get your hands close to get it. Also changing your string length will not kill your muscle memory. It is pretty incredible how short of a time it takes to adjust to a new string length. Plus I bet Kwyjiibo becomes easier for you.

It took me a while to learn this trick when I first started. What really helped me was getting someone else to hold the yoyo while it was dead.

Maybe try getting to the stage before the first hop and getting someone else to grab the yoyo and go through the motions.

It’s definitely a trick worth knowing.

I did that already. I know what the motion of the yoyo (and my hands) is supposed to be, and what it looks like from my perspective (in slow/stop motion). The problem is that when I execute the first hop at full speed, the physics of what happens doesn’t seem to match what I see in the tutorial videos.

So you have managed to do the first hop successfully with a partner? (Lol!)

If you go through it slowly with someone else being the yoyo you will see what string needs to be where and then you just need to get your hands to make it happen.

You are right. I already know where things need to be. But when I execute the pop and cross, the result is a tangled mess because the strings don’t “open up” the way they do when I artificially move everything in slow motion.

Ok.

I know you said it wasn’t your best video attempt but in the video the yoyo ends up going up and to the right, does the yoyo always do this with you? It could be because of the direction of the yoyo trajectory it catches another string.

The yoyo needs to go straight up vertically and it should hit the necessary strings.

It’s not snagging on thick string at all?

I’ve been concentrating on just popping it straight up into the one string that sits above it from the wrist mount. I get one of two results: either the yoyo misses the string above it, flying reasonably high (I’ve actually crossed my hands and landed the first hop this way a couple of times, but that was wrong because the yoyo missed the string above it), or it hits the string above it and shoots straight back down without having gone up very high, leaving no room for me to cross my hands, and the result is a tangled mess.

Hmmm, it sounds like you’ve almost got it and you know what needs to be done so that’s good!

See if this helps, try popping the yoyo up slower than the speed of your hands crossing, effectively giving the yoyo more air time and only initiate the cross over once the yoyo has hit the top string.

This might help, get into position just before the hop then lower your hands in their current position, then bring your hands up more quickly before you initiate the hop, that way you already have upwards motion. Then you can execute the hop, hit the top string, and then cross.

Hopefully by doing this preemptive upwards motion it means you have to put less emphasis on the hop and you can concentrate on getting that top string.

I often find when I’m doing some fixed axle tricks that it requires me to move my arms before my hands actually move, so I already have momentum before I even initiate a trick element.

Hope it helps!

you do not need longer string at all! Just keep practicing it as much as possible and you will get it I promise. You can do it. When you hit it you are going to be so excited

When I hit it (consistently, and on purpose), then it’s on to the second hop, which is widely acknowledged to be even harder to hit than the first hop.

This is difficult to describe. Just pop the yoyo up a couple inches and cross your hands like you are doing. Don’t concentrate on trying to pop it into the strings above, just pop it up a little and cross your hands. The yoyo naturally goes into the next position. Do it kind of gently. It’s one of those things that all of a sudden is going to start working.

I made a video for you. Hope this helps

To me it sounds like the slack management is what’s giving you trouble. How are you with boingy boing and pop n fresh? Both of those tricks are similar in the way you need to keep the string taut, but not so tight that the yoyo bounces right off when it hits.

I think this thread has been done to death, so I’ll just add the one tip that helped me. Focus mainly on making sure all the strings are lined up before you do the hop. Like, if you’re looking straight down on the mount, it should look like a single straight line going through the center of the little triangle formation coming off your throw hand. I hope that makes sense.

Also, I stand by my statement I made the other day. I still hate this trick.

hopefully the video I made helps with the hop

Great video Christopher!! You know what help me a lot was watching “thedailyspiritbomb” on Instagram. Stevie Ray is the master of this trick… I would watch where he would place his hands etc. one last thing, when you pop the yoyo on the top string it’s a gentle pop… don’t try to do a speed combo… Just nice and easy…
Just keep practicing, you will get it… like I said, it took me 5 weeks to get it, :joy:

Might be a good idea to get the beginning move of White Buddha learned and comfortable
