I agree, you’re right. Sorry for this post everyone
I think the problem here is maybe we dont have examples of what you are trying to say.
I mean are you saying someone needs to have a certain point of skill in order to make a video talking about the hobby they enjoy?
Or is it that you don’t like people LARPing as experts when they aren’t?
To say some people don’t understand simple concepts but then say I don’t mean to offend anyone is a kind of making my head spin man.
As someone who is very blunt I understand that words can easily be misinterpreted in terms of tone and I am guilty of that in this very thread but with large blunt opinions come well … more large blunt opinions . Lol
This I agree with. People make your videos, share you passion . Its contagious and we need more contagious to help yo-yo grow.
Okay bro… I’ll try one more time… Then I’m literally done…
You just said (I mean are you saying someone needs to have a certain point of skill in order to make a video talking about the hobby they enjoy?)
My answer… No! They do not need to have a certain amount of skill in order to make a video talking about the hobby that they enjoy! I want people to do this, it helps the community grow. But… When making your review… If you can’t do horizontal or speed combos… Then don’t say anything about horizontal or speed combos when talking about said throw… But please keep making your videos so the community keeps growing. If you can’t understand it this way… Idk what else to say… If you’re good at tech talk about tech… If you like the shape say you love the shape… Compare it to your other yoyos and say why you like it better than the other… Could be the color the way it feels on the string, etc… Just don’t talk about the things you don’t have the skills to be talking about is all I’m trying to say. I’m not saying I hate or dislike these ppl for doing it and if it makes them happy then just keep doing it. Just simply expressing something I noticed while watching a bunch of reviews. @EOS44 said it best… Im not looking for entertainment when watching a review. I’m looking for accurate and analytical data so when I waste my money on a yoyo I know exactly what I’m getting. You seem like a great guy though and you are nice with a yoyo. Wish you nothing but the best. If know me in real life… You know I’m all about spreading love and positivity as well as doing anything I can to help another person
Dude, no need to apologize. This post is perfectly fine. I haven’t read all the replies to it, but I can guess their nature. (And probably even who made them with decent accuracy)
If you haven’t already realized, this community is quite an opinionated bunch
If you’re taking some heat, don’t worry about it. I guarantee I’ve taken worse. I remember coming to a rather sharp and unpleasant realization about forum demographics when I made that “Consistency is Key” thread, which emphasized my stance that while collecting yoyos is fun, actually knowing how to use them is better. And that getting better at yoyoing doesn’t take 4 hours a day like many of the older users on here seem to think it does.
Yeah, I got skewered for that one in pretty much every way possible. Accusations of exercising a superiority complex to messages saying my yoyoing was bad, to even three PMs saying I was going to be a bad doctor were leveled at me.
And that really set me back. I grew up on these forums in a lot of ways. I was an excited 13 year when I joined. And over the years I’ve seen the demographics change considerably. Most of the people who enjoy yoyoing for its own sake have migrated to Instagram. In their place, people who focus more on buying things like organic yoyos and MonkeyfingeR stuff have joined. And I like Instagram, but it’s essentially a show-off zone. Which is cool, but not a place where a lot of thoughtful discussion takes place.
For me, thoughtful discussion on all aspects of yoyoing was always here. But like I said, the demographics have shifted.
Shifted to the point where there’s almost like two camps: the young gun, meta trick learning throwers, and the slightly older to middle aged, organic loving collectors. (Yes not everyone completely falls in one category or another, but you see what I’m saying)
Its like a weird little form of identity politics with each side having its own set of beliefs, members of each often feeling personally attacked when presented with a differing opinion.
I don’t like that. I wish there were more people who did both. But that’s not the way it be. At least right now.
I’m not going to abandon this forum or anything, because I love it. But it’s true, we’re in a bit of a weird spot demographically.
So I say, don’t apologize for your thread it’s a perfectly valid opinion. And take the heated discussion as par for the course right now.
Keep your head up my man.
Yeah you’re right. I’m just seriously a positive person and would give the shirt of my back to someone I don’t even know. I hate arguing and don’t see how this even turned negative. I was just expressing my opinion about something and somehow it got taken the wrong way.
Yeah, you’re totally good dude.
Just looking back at some of these comments, a lot of the people giving you a hassle are the same ones that hated the thread I made. It’s gonna happen.
Let it roll off. It’s all good
Thanks man! On the plus side… I learned my first horizontal trick not long ago… Gonna need you to help me take my horizontal to the next level haha
Just as an FYI to anyone reading, I have no hate or malice toward Cotton.
I have a differing opinion obviously but it’s really not that serious . I do also realize my tone over written text can be a bit rough. I also have a big mouth. As my friends always say “if you want to know how Chris feels about you all you have to do is ask. “
I just want everyone to know my comments are not meant to be hateful
Maybe you guys should try to not victimize yourselves so much @nightshadow @Theycallmecotton ?
It comes of as lacking in self-awareness sometimes.
I have no beef against any of you two. Just pointing something out.
Maybe you got skewered because you take what people say out of context.
As one of those people that messaged you, I definitely did not say you were going to be a bad doctor. I said you may benefit from some humility heading into the field of medicine. This was after you threw an ad-hominem attack at me after I responded to your post.
Just wanted to provide some clarification for anyone who was wondering.
Haha, point well taken, and acknowledged as entirely valid.
But I’m going to leave my reply up there all the same. Because it is true, it seriously sucks to be in the position the Mr. Cotton feels like he is. Also, because while the thread I made that I mentioned might have been abrasive and rather obnoxious in retrospect, there was some seriously uncalled for garbage that went down in front of, and behind the curtain on that one. (Not from you my dude)
And that is as side of the community that is rather unfortunate.
So yeah, self victimization is super obnoxious, and to be carefully avoided. But I think I’m going to leave that reply up.
(Don’t worry, I won’t be calling the cyber bullying hotline )
PS: I’m loving my contact, y’all really nailed that one.
Haha, Nah. I wasn’t even thinking of you. While you forcefully disagreed, you definitely kept it within the realm of civility.
Rest assured, you were not the only one who contacted me directly.
Touche
Ok, group hug is over. Let’s argue about vibe or float now.
Facts lmao
I respect you and your opinion. Now let’s go throw some tricks
Been in this hobby for ages, and speaking for the reviews I make, I make reviews either
- On yoyos that I can’t find other reviews on
- To try to entertain
- To describe how the yoyo feels in play compared to others
because sometimes, people don’t do this.
Keep up the great work
