I’m self motivated. If I want to do something, then I’m going to go do it. Yoyo is one of those things where I really want to do it. Really starting this at nearly age 40, well, I am at a disadvantage over many of them “kids” on here. It’s not easy, but I want to do it, so I practice whenever I can, which sometimes may not be for days, but I do what I can when I can. This is also not coming easy to me, so it’s hard work. Clearly, I must really want to do this or there’s no reason for me to continue. I am quite pleased I can do Plastic Whip. I am looking forward to starting Rewind next week. I still need to smooth out The Matrix more and refine Plastic Whip.
I find the best motivation comes from within. You have to have that drive to want to do something if you really expect to be good at it. It’s why I excel at audio and computers and data comm, because I have that fire inside that pushes me to do good at it. Yoyo is just an example of using the motivation to overcome obstacles. The obstacle being that this is NOT easy for me at all. While the motto here is “Make the simple amazing”, well, let me assure you that it may be amazing, but it sure ain’t simple. That doesn’t mean the motto isn’t valid, because with work and practice, one can make the amazing appear simple, and hence, the motto becomes true.
That’s not to say that having other sources of motivation aren’t bad. Some of us need to augment our internal drive with some external encouragement. In my case, my wife hates that I do audio and things I’m a bigger dork for doing the yoyo and she only likes the computer and data comm stuff because it brings in the dollars(so does the audio work!). Whatever your motivating forces are, as long as it’s for the purposes of being constructive, useful or are positive, it’s good and beneficial.
A bit of advice though for all:
Life isn’t that long. Sure, 100 years may seem a long time, but in the bigger scheme of things, it’s a nanosecond of a nanosecond. We’re here and gone before the universe is even aware of our existence. While that may seem “heavy”, the point is that while sometimes we have to do things to earn money, we should spend as much of our spare time doing things we enjoy. Well, there are caveats to that, as these activities should be LEGAL and non-harmful, or at the very least, not harmful to others. With that in mind and taking into consideration this is a yoyo forum, if that means you want to play with a toy, then do it. The argument of “don’t you have something better to do” is always up for debate. But, there are worse things that can be done. There are certainly other things that can be done. Spend your spare time doing things you enjoy. Be happy. Hopefully happy people live longer.
