The masses can’t fathom a yoyo can be made of metal, much less cost more than $20. They are still trying to comprehend string tricks vs. looping and it needing different gear. 4A and 5A is a bit much to wrap their heads around as well.
Small steps. I find it’s best to have stuff for examples. “This is string trick play”, “this is off-string”, “this has the dice is for counterweight play and it does stuff like this” or things like “these are looping tricks”. It helps people understand.
Doubt they ever could every time I offer them my classic to try it out Thayer just mess with the string, without the yoyo starting and just say “OOOOOOOOoooooooooooh you got served”
lots of people can’t figure out what I’m doing when I get out my 4A yoyo. Someone said they bought my DM2 at K-mart for a dollar, and then insisted I wasted all my money on the one I have.
I thought I was the only one who suffered the “walk the dog” thing. Im a 4a player and when ever I show it to friends or people in public there’s always that one person who says “now let me see you walk the dog” with a big smile. It use to bother me a lot in the beginning, but now I just show them some more complicated trick instead. The one thing I’m glad about is people dont mess with my yoyo, or attempt to use it since they see it’s not attached.
I bring my yoyo to school and people always ask if they can try. I feel bad when I have to say no, so I started bringing my butterfly to let people use. Someone asked is they could try so I gave them my butterfly to use. They threw it down the way we all did before we learned the correct way, and to his surprise it didn’t come back up. Then he said: “I think this one is broken. Can I try THAT one?” he pointed at my grind machine I was using. I then gave him a long speech about how this yoyo was unresponsive and how he wouldn’t be able to get it back up because he was throwing it wrong and because you had to do a bind to get it up. His reply: “well that’s dumb.” he then walked away.
Another time I let someone used my butterfly they started swinging it around and hitting people in the head with it. I told him to stop and he replied by hitting me over the head with it. A few people complained to a teacher and she called the kid to her room. The kid then loudly replied “here you go!” before throwing my butterfly back purposefully throwing it at my forehead. The next time I started yo yoing the teacher shouted “put that thing away!” i thought she was talking to someone else so I kept yoing. She came over to me and said “put that away before I write you a detention.” keep in mind this all happened at lunchtime where no one had ever bothered me about my yoing before. I had to wait weeks before I dared to yoyo in that spot again. -_-
Kid: That’s not even a real yo-yo!
Me: Yes it is.
Kid: No it’s not, real yo-yos are bigger!(I was using my Grind Machine)
Me: What? Then what is a real yo-yo?
Kid: Real yo-yos are bigger and the string isn’t attached to them. Plus you use it with two sticks and a string and you don’t even have the sticks!
Me: Do you mean a Diablo?
No! I mean a yo-yo! I search Diablo in Google images
Kid: Yea! Thats a REAL yo-yo, not a phony like yours.
Me: Look at the search bar. D-I-A-B-L-O.
This annoyed me so much.
This thread reminds me that being a certain age has its drawbacks. I’m just old enough now that yoyoing becomes an affectation or a quirk, and I don’t have to deal with truly mean-spirited criticisms. I have annoyances, sure, but none of them are close to the bullying or ill-intentioned stuff some of you folks have to deal with.
“That’s not a proper yoyo” and “Why would you waste your time and money on this?” are probably the tops. But I don’t encounter it often and it’s not as mean-spirited as some of the encounters you guys have had.
Do a yo-yo battle!!! Since there’s two main players and we both have sociology together, we geg told that and asked who’s better than the other…hate people
would you really rather another one of these threads be started? It’s a pretty general topic, it can’t really be necroed in the same sense that others can.
When people ask to try your precious yoyo and when they do it feels like you will get a heart attack if they ding it. Or when someone’s ego is way to big and figure oh that’s easy when its not and then they start fussing about how it wont come up!
