Monometal equivalents of bimetals

ppl make design tradeoffs all the time. 100% physics optimal is not everyone’s goal

“You could use a Nascar to race LeMans but it’s nicer to spend time in a Ferrari”

Recognize that less than 1 percent of the entirety of the planet Earth, ever….. ever enters any yo-yo contest at any skillset level.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the subject of this thread. I personally find it very interesting how some mono metal yo-yos play very very close to bi metal counterparts.

I will give one example to give slightly more depth to my point of view

I have two titanium based yo-yos. The Wild Tilderness and the Wild Wildest.

The Tild is a mono and the Wildset is Ti body/stainless rings.

If I remember correctly, the price difference was well over $100? I got the mono metal first. And I was amazed at how awesome it played for me.

I got to bi metal months later. Very close in dimensions and not that different in weight. I immediately noticed that it felt different on the very first breakaway. Little more power on the rims. Very fast. Had a little more punch. And feels different on the catch, especially Fast comebacks.

I threw the bimetal every day for a few weeks. Then I put it down and picked up the Tilderness mono metal. After throwing the mono metal for about an hour, I noticed that my mind and my reactions had almost immediately adapted to the slightly different playing characteristics, and within the scope of the tricks I am capable of doing it didn’t make one bit of difference, which one I was throwing.

And that being said, I also felt that I didn’t even enjoy one more than the other. Whichever one I was throwing I just kept shaking my head and thinking… man. Is this a good yo-yo or what?

So in my opinion, very close and performance… Not very close in price… So if a person didn’t have deep pockets and asked me which one I thought they should get… I would not hesitate to suggest they just get the mono metal and not necessarily spend a minute dreaming about things that they don’t even need When that extra money could be better spent, if nothing else on another yo-yo or some string or bearings.
