Mini historical quiz

So… I’m looking through some stuff… I’m looking through a whole lot of stuff, find a few things to send to a friend.

What I found to me was not a miracle fine because I already knew I had them. I just needed to track them down.

Obviously, I have no way of knowing the actual age of every person that frequents this forum on a regular basis? But I could make a pretty solid bet that I started fiddling around with yo-yo’s before at least half of you guys and girls were even born.

So my question of the day is simple.

How many of you remember this yo-yo? And how many of you remember the purpose of this yo-yo?

By purpose I mean, how did a person end up with a few of these in their possession?? What kind of hoops did they have to jump through to be awarded or given this particular model?

I’m not even sure I could give you the most accurate answer? But I think somebody knows? So this is what they look like.

Any thoughts are welcome

If I recall, wasn’t that basically a Raider with Fireball packaging? That’s about as deep as my knowledge goes on this though, haha.

Age-wise, I was around long enough to have an original Fireball though.

Yeah I got my first one for Christmas when I was 7 or 8 yrs old probably? Clear body, red caps, 100% awesome. That woulda have been around ‘95 or ‘96.

My current Yomega collection

Couple of fire balls, a couple saber raiders with very rough bearings, and ones missing a shim, and my recently resurrected brain!

Idk what it is but I know it sleeps 3 times longer than ordinary yo-yos.

It appears to be a Team Yomega Excellence Raider, made specifically for team members. Possibly a Spingear edition.

1995 so before I was born! :joy:

Nope… it is definitely a Fireball. It has the silver axle and a plastic transaxle.

My intention was to send these two to a friend of mine. And then I had this bright idea to change them over to raider guts. Raiders axle, raider, spacers, raider bearing equals raider.

The first one I pulled out of the package for the first time and it unscrewed like I just bought it yesterday.

The second one will not unscrew. For some reason, the plastic degraded on this particular one and the Nylock nut or the head.(can’t tell which?) is just turning in the plastic.

A brand new appearing yo-yo. I don’t know if it was ever exposed to sunlight before I bought it? But I know after I bought a bunch of stuff at a store that was closing out stock, I brought it home and put it in a temperature control room in the yo-yo‘s are never subjected to any kind of funny weather

I got at least a dozen of these things… The blue and green teen fireballs. I also have several pro spin yo-yos that have red bodies and black side caps and pro spin on the cap written and I think it’s silver if memory serves? I haven’t checked yet to see if the pro spins or fire balls or Raiders?

I’m gonna grab several more of the team yo-yos and unscrew every one of those suckers. Hopefully the one that tanked on me tonight is just a rarity and not what they’re all gonna do? If nothing else it’s a pretty good example that as plastic ages, it doesn’t matter whether you use it or not it’s gonna drop dead.

I will post an update after I try on screwing some of the other yo-yos.

All I know is that was the exact packaging my Fireball came in when I bought it in '97.

I cannot remember if mine came in this raider package or if i put it in there 25 years ago. The tape on the box looks like it is original so i believe it came this way. Different ink color than yours too, maybe there were a couple different runs?
